Self proclaimed producer; opinions please

An actual producer knows his or her only real job is to coax the best possible performance out of each member of a band during their recording session. A legit producer wouldn’t care one iota what a player had to do or use to get their best performance down on a track as long as they nailed it.

This self-proclaimed producer sounds like yet another prima donna poseur. You’ll often run into these wannabes operating out of small project studios flying under the radar in residential areas.

If this guy (I doubt it’s a woman) refuses to work with a band over something as unimportant as someone using a capo, then all I can say is that band just dodged a bullet.

Hmm... my opinion is, that's funny! And so, it's probably a joke/troll post. And if you respond, you'll be feeding the troll and missing the joke. Which will make it funnier.

I don’t know if he’s a troll or just a moron, but many, many professional musicians, much more well known than that “producer”, use a capo. Usually not on bass, although it’s been done. If a band uses drop tuning, is that a crutch?

I'll pass on reading what the link will provide. The link in of it's self it the producer had more than a few loose screws if indeed his only problem is the use of a capo, and not the other more important issues related to the session, like this guitarist is a terrible no talent hack.

Using capos is lame, for people who can’t figure out how to play in other keys, and a pain because it always screws up intonation…but I wouldn’t refuse business because of it and play with people who use the annoying little things today.

Please don't use Quora for informational purposes. It was designed primarily to draw people to advertising, unlike television, the internet or any form of entertainment that has been actively promoted in the last century.

I'm sure this 'Producer' also has opinions on what kind of bass that a bassist should play and he will not work with anyone who doesn't play with that specific kind of bass. In other words, someone who is listening with their eyes and ego instead of to the MUSIC and the artist making it.

This music producer is doing such good business they can turn down work for trivial reasons? I don't use a capo on my bass, I sometimes use one on my guitar. The rhythm guitarist in one projects uses one commonly, and it makes me a better musician. It forces me to learn the songs better and more quickly because if I get lost on a new song, it is more difficult to figure out what he is playing.

Even a couple people in this thread don't understand how a capo is used. It's not just to change keys but also used with or without alternate tunings to get interesting voicings. Good acoustic guitarists use one so their songs don't all sound alike.

Yeah, I'm not clicking on something like that... That just sounds like a good way to sign up for a laundry list of spam!

But that said, he'd better be recording directly to wax cylinders and not relying on studio cheats like multi-track recording and god forbid he should be using anything other than tape, if he is!

I always assumed that a "producer" would work for anybody as long as the client is paying. Maybe he/she should just say they need an extra "point" if the guitarist is going to subject them to a capo.

I dunno--maybe they are lame. Just in case, I would refuse to work with Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, et al for using a "crutch" like that.
