Here's the thing--I was a hotshot bassist in high school, entirely self-taught. Played in bar bands with much older guys when I was under-aged--that kinda thing. Couldn't read a lick of music but was learning theory by virtue of learning to play by ear(I learned piano by ear too, and used to pretend to read the music at recitals, but did it all from memory

I went to music college straight out of high school not being able to read at all.
I quit after a year to go on tour but that's another story...
I would put as much time into learning theory (and reading) on piano as possible. That's the "big picture"-- way more valuable than awesome bass chops. You have the natural ability on the bass, then let it develop but do not limit yourself to the bass.
