  • Trade it for 30 Glarry basses. They're better than Fender anyway.

Hey TB, I have a delima. I have 9 basses and am trying to downsize. I have 4 jazz basses, an amazing 2005 MIA (I've owned almost 30 MIA Fenders, this one is special), an equally amazing parts MIA with PLEKed neck, a USA Geddy, and a 1972 Jazz (black/maple). I've been agonizing over whether to sell the parts J or the Geddy for about a month now. Agonizing because I love and play/gig both equally. The 2005 MIA will never leave my side. It just occurred to me yesterday that I NEVER play the 72 since I got the Geddy and maybe I should sell that one. In fact, the 72 is stored under my bed. I acquired it in 1995 for $700 and figure it's worth about 3K now. The only real reason I can see to keep it is so I can sell it later for a higher price, assuming 70s Fenders continue to rise in value. My guitar/bass playing friends think I'm crazy for considering selling it. Thoughts?

I think your friends are right. That should be an heirloom pass down kind of a bass.
Out of curiosity, how would you say theUSA Geddy Lee compares to your 72?
It doesn't. The Geddy is a top notch professional instrument. The other is a 70s Fender....
But seriously, the Geddy is everything I always wanted my 72 to be. Better playability, better tone, similar necks.
My son plays bass but has no interest in playing the 72. He prefers 5 stringers.

I also have a '72 that doesn't get much play.
I came from the short sale world, bought the Jazz in the 70's,
and had a helluva time adjusting because of the scale.

I finally did but still, something was off with it,
and after putting Fralins in, it came alive.
I also did a refin in the 70s so it's a pretty sexy beast as well.

I considered selling mine too a while back,
but couldn't do it, in fact, I don't sell any of mine.
But if I did, it would be the 1st to go because of what it would bring.

So I voted "keep it" because if I can't sell mine,
you can't sell yours. Now that's fair!!!.....057912

If you don't love it....or use it, then perhaps consider
selling. I'm old enough to remember when 70's Jazz Basses were once worth next to nothing. And hit and miss in respect to quality. The only reason they're worth so much is because the societal norms of our community have shifted and we 'collectively agree' that '70s basses are desirable. I sold a '73 lemon about 10 years ago and still have no regrets. Although I traded a great '75 that I still ache for.

I would personally sell. What if you have a leak, flood, natural disaster, theft, etc. It could become useless or disappear altogether.
Also with me, I'm not keeping what I'm not playing.
This is very subjective. It's yours. Do what you want with it.

‘72s are not being being made any more, Period! yes you can make someone happy if you sell now, yet what if in the future you decide that axe be to be pass on to a family member, now you determine who get the Axe. by then should you decide not to pass to a family member, then sell it. good luck!
