I guess it comes down to what you want from listening to music. Virtuosity doesn't interest me so much. It's impressive but I'm not looking to be impressed, I want to be affected emotionally.

Experience shows that these "Let's be real" or "Let's be reasonable" threads hardly ever result in agreement.
Slash says “hold my beer” … Velvet Revolver had a very good run in the early 2000’s.. & I’d say they were quite relevant during their time.

At the end of the day, players exist on many 'skill levels', everything from God-gifted freaks of nature like Jaco or Mr Clarke, down through a big number of solid working professionals, through the guys like me that worked the VFWs, Eagles, and the local bars and clubs, to church guys, all the way down to rank beginners, and even a few that literally need SOMEBODY to take the axe away from them. And all the gigs and performances this vast array of players are different, and suited to their individual circumstances.
So, in short, nobody played my gigs but me, and nobody sounded or played like me doing them. You can apply that to the thousands of situations above. Because ultimately, it's the playing, the music making.
Comparing yourself or poking holes in other peoples playing is a non-productive dead end, and you can spend your career sweating bullets trying to get to a level you're just not built to reach, and there's no crime in that. That, for instance, guys will spend days or even weeks learning a Jaco tune he played off the top of his head instantly. That's got to tell you something, and there's no shame in not matching that sort of freakish ability.

I’ve found lots of boomers to be some of the biggest stick-in-the-mud types when it comes to ongoing changes in musical styles and techniques, and I’m am a boomer, albeit in the “Generation Jones” second half. I had a feeling that the self-congratulatory Woodstock era crowd would be insufferable at some point. Yeah, don’t trust anyone over 30.

I was almost going to “like” this, but of course the obligatory “boomer” insult had to be included.
Not a boomer myself, but I’d love to see our society drop the ageism bit. We should all be fortunate enough to get as old as the “boomers”. We all have so much to learn from each other, be it different cultures, or different generations.

Born in 73, as soon as I've reached the 50+ age I've been considered a boomer, at the beginning I tried "nope I'm a genXer guys, 1973 you know..." but for the vast majority of the millenials we are boomers whatsoever. I've stopped trying to argue, that was leading nowhere. Social medias...
