The post Sounds like a particular political party that dislikes anyone that doesn’t agree with them so “let’s ban them”.

Well OP, not a “Boomer” (speaking in generational labels is gross IMHO), but to address you post, knee deep Gen X kid here.

When you want to start banning people and labeling them because the have an opinion about something ‘bass related’ on a website that is actually meant to talk about bass called Talkbass and it differs from you is sad.

You know what I miss... Newspapers. You already bought the thing, so they didn't have to bury the lead with five paragraphs of nonsense. Headlines that didn't keep you guessing. Opinions in the actual opinions section, not slathered throughout every story like it's a fact. Writers had more than 140 characters to use, so they actually wrote Supreme Court instead of SCOTUS. You didn't have to get a second subscription just for the puzzles. A whole page just for movie times. Comics.

I just finished reading my morning paper.

First warm morning so I'm sitting on the back porch with a cuppa coffee. Read the paper, and now having a look at TB.

Later I'll make a sandwich, and work out the chart for a new tune we want to play.

Why would you (or anyone for that matter) want to ban someone from expressing their opinion or preference? Because it doesn't match yours perhaps?

Consider a nightmarish science fiction scenario: everyone on this planet likes the same thing. They have the same opinion of everything, and they all have the same preferences. Everyone likes the same exact music, food, clothing, hairstyles, cars, bass guitars, bass amps, effects pedals, etc. You know what I would say about that deranged scenario? This: "Ewww!" I would never want to live in such a freakish science fiction world where everyone liked the same thing and had the same opinion of everything. That would just be so disgustingly gross. So when someone expresses an opinion that differs from mine, or likes something that I don't like, I breathe a big sigh of happy relief. Why? Because it means I don't live in that freakazoid science fiction world. I live in a muuuuuch better one! That's why I love it when someone likes a certain style of music that I can't stand, or they like a certain bassist that I would never care for. Thank goodness! It means I live in the wonderful world of differences and diversity. Btw, I'm not just boomerish, I'm a real honest to goodness boomer (I was born in 1956 and I turn 70 next month) and one of the things I have learned in life is to be SO VERY THANKFUL for differences and diversity in this world. It's what makes life on this planet interesting.

Or worse, everyone on the planet pretends to like the same thing and pretends to agree with things they are actually in complete disagreement with.

Can we ban people from saying things along the lines of, "Serious skills, but not for me," in this sub-forum?

I'm only half-joking, but can we have a discussion about it?

It seems like every time someone posts something about a new young and upcoming bass player, be it someone flashy like Thundercat or someone who holds the groove down like Michael League, most comments are something along the lines of, "They're great, but," and then some general complaint. Would we be saying similar things about Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and James Jamerson?

And let's not even get into when the bass player is a woman.

It's getting very tiring, boomer-ish and boring.

It reminds me of browsing through guitar magazines/websites. It's always Paul McCartney and Steve Harris this, Slash and Eddie Van Halen that. Yes, they're great. But you know who's not created anything even remotely relevant this century? McCartney, Harris, Slash and Van Halen.

My mediocrity is never threatened by virtuosity! I don't like super fast speedy fusiony music although I love smooth jazz. I like funky driven groovin' booty shaking music and that's all I ever strived to be as a bassist. I surely can acknowledge the skills and virtuosity of those that desire to play that way. There's music for everyone.

As bassists we can be both artisans (skilled at a certain craft- ie playing the bass) and artists (creating a form of expression in sound). It is very possible for me to appreciate one of those two aspects of another player without appreciating the other.

I am more inclined to make such a comment as the OP mentions when I appreciate the bass-playing skills of a player but don’t really enjoy their music- I could honestly say that about most of the most technically gifted bassists out there. On the other hand, if I really enjoy the art/music that a player creates I am less inclined to care how technically skilled they are at playing an instrument- at least for me, someone doesn’t need to be a great player in technical terms to make music that I connect with. In fact often my favorite music isn’t made by virtuosos of instrumentation, just people with intriguing ideas who express them confidently within their limited means.

Why? Seems like a respectful way to say you dont like something while giving credit to their abilities. Would you prefer the typical social media response of just "they suck' or "worst ever"? I mean Ive never seen those go badly, have you?
