He ran glue along the slab as well. You can see it in the video briefly.

Yeah, it is only shown for a brief moment... easy to miss.


This definitely isn't the "best" way to build, but is certainly entertaining, and gives some options to those lacking a lot of tools.

I would have drilled it out with the spade bit and then chiseled, but he's obviously got his "system" down !



Seems like he has a drill and a small band saw, and thats about it.

Personally I think I enjoyed his approximate pen techniques, eh why measure anything, close enough attitude.

I don't think he used a square or a ruler once. I liked that. I'm about to make a bass a string through, and after watching this I just betch'a I can do it without a press.

Do you know if there is an advantage to an angled string through config, say for instance in the way that Yamaha has just done with their new BB models? Instead of 90 degrees , the the string through is at 45 (or so). The designer's idea came from following a new 'Vette in traffic on the way to his production meeting.

Use it if you've got it... makes life much easier. However, I think the vid shows that "necessity is the mother of invention"...you can do a lot with a bit of ingenuity.

I'll probably get some flak for this, but I'm not honestly convinced that there's an advantage to ANY string through configuration. But that's just my opinion, and you asked...

Check out some of last years Talkbass Buildoff projects. TONS of great ideas, workarounds, and cool tricks in those threads.(Which reminds me, it's getting about that time again....)

I dont know about using those metal studs, why not just use wooden dowels.

If you search you might find a thread with very good explanation, (all down to the physiscs of it which I don't really understand, the thread was full of numbers and formulas i recall) that shows the difference in string tension when the angle of the string changes.
but as darkhorse said, don't think there is much "real life" difference in this.
I think someone stated the main advantage of 45 angle against 90 is that the string suffers less and should last a bit more... but i might just be making this up. don't take my word for it.

With a pine body, metal studs are required for mid-hump.
