stock p bass does some things really well, some other things not as well.
Grooving rhythm section, always sits perfectly.
Slapping, works, not my favorite sound.
Soloing, works, not very articulate, not my favorite
Add a bridge jazz pup, now it does everything well.

What do Duff McKagan, Sting, and Mark Hoppus all have in common? (your influences)
They all have a Fender Signature P-bass!
And as shown by 5 string blues ,
Sting plays a 50s P and its rather different then the modern day P and i also perfered him when he used a Ibanez musician.
Duff used a PJ and it was called a bass special , i dont mind PJ's
Mark Hoppus uses a P bass with a reveresed P pickup and its closer to the neck i think.I also perfer his tone when he used a stingray.
So, P Bass people have never bashed boutique basses in boutique and/or ERB threads?

Thats complete crap. Lets says you have 3 MIM 2012 fender P bass with maple boards and a black body , identical basses made at the same time with the same strings and play them all through the same thing and record it . Then take one of the and route it for a J pickup and turn the volume down the J pickup and play it through the same amp and play the others as well through that same amp.
Guess what in the first round of testing there all going to sound different because if it was made the same day , with the same parts its still different, they all will sounds different each time in both recordings.
To say a PJ with the J pickup turned off doesnt sound like a P is absurd because the P your comparing it to is a different P bass and no bass sounds the same.

Seems to me like some P-ple have a chip on their shoulder, hence a thread like this. Don't get me wrong, the slap tone of the P bass is awesome. Warm grooves with the tone all the way off is sweet bassiness, but if the tone is really in the fingers, it doesn't matter what bass you play. The P bass is the antithesis of the 'most interesting bass in the world'. It's a historical icon in the development of an electric instrument. That being said, it's not the bass - it's P-osters who try so feverishly to fend-er of the bashers by being louder and proclaiming the P can do anything, and it comes off as 'hey look, I can be Michael Manring on my P bass' - in other words the bass makes you a better player.

As much as I love P-Basses (I have 3 Fender P's) and swear by them, it cannot do some things.
And to cover the ground it can't, I got an MIJ Jaguar.

After today's practice for a show on Sunday, I must say that a P-bass sits perfectly in most configurations I've tried it with. Does not take over the band sound but you could still hear it clearly as part of the band mix. Makes life much easier... Maybe that's the main reason why many use Precisions for many different styles.
All the posts about my bass is better than yours" are getting rather annoying... What threat do you all perceive in hearing someone say how much they like their bass that just do happens to be different from yours? Yes, I've seen lots of boutique players bash P basses, in this thread and in many others, and I've seen P players get over defensive over their lack of buttons, multiple pickups, and fancy woods. If either of these type of people is you, try to be a little more self aware and realize that you're acting like a juvenile, or perhaps someone with inadequacy issues. Not saying you have issues, I'm saying you act like you do. So please just stop it and grow up.
