Check out Miles Davis Live at the Fillmore. Dave Holland sounds great on upright. When he switches to P-bass through that 2x15 JBL D-140 Showman it's weak sauce. Very good example of why we now play basses with way more low end than a P.

Don't get me wrong. Live at Leeds is one of my favorite records but that tone doesn't work for every music. I think you know that.:)

Yeah and you'll never get a Ford to feel like a Chevy.

If a P bass can only get bottom end through the board, as has been suggested, and if it fails to do so live, as has been stated, isn't that the fault of the sound guy? It's never ever been a problem for me. But I'm not Dave Holland.

How is this not P bashing? Seriously guys, you're free to love your non-P basses, but what are you feeling threatened by here?

Regardless of all the haters, the actual fact of the matter is that there is no genre that you can't play with a P Bass. It is better at some than others, but the only can't is in the hands of the musician.

No, it won't sound (or feel) like a Rickenbacker, nor will it sound just like a Höfner, or a Stingray, or a... but it can play every type of music that you would want a one of them for.

There is no genre that you can't play with my bass(Ibanez SRX) either. IT is better than some than others, but the only "can't" is in the hands of the musician.

No, it won't sound (or feel) like a Rickenbacker, nor will it sound just like a Höfner, or a Stingray, or a... but it can play every type of music that you would want.

In fact I bet the same can be said for any decent bass.

That's my point, exactly. It drives me up a wall when people say "X Bass is a one-trick pony, and it can't be used for Y music." Yes, it can. It will probably do well at it (if the musician is decent), too. Many bases have a definite sound of their own, and that sound may work best with a certain genre, but it can still play other genres and do it well.

So, isn't it in fact "hating" for people to claim that only P basses are sufficient at "doing everything" when in fact most any bass is adequate at covering the entirety of the musical spectrum where the electric bass guitar is used? Aren't they "hating" ALL other basses?

My take on it is ... P basses good .... other basses good too. Do some people personally prefer P basses over anything else? Sure they do! That is why they call them personal preferences. No facts. No proofs without a reasonable doubt. Just opinions. Some prefer a P some prefer something else.

I don't think it's "hating" when someone claims that a P Bass is sufficient to do everything. That's love for one's own instrument (boy, that really sounds dirty, but oh well). P Bass players (at least in this thread) aren't claiming that no other instrument is worthwhile (that would be hating), they are merely claiming that their own favorite instrument is good enough for everything (that's loving). See the difference? Lauding an instrument is loving it, not hating others. It's hating when someone jumps into every thread like this one, and claims that an instrument is no good, and it doesn't matter what the instrument is.

I don't get it, though, you don't see people jumping into the Warwick (or whatever) threads and saying that the Corvette can't play a certain genre, so they should get a P Bass instead. You only see people jumping on the haters bandwagon when you mention Leo's products.

How is it bashing? The OP asked a question. I answered. I love love my '57ri in a duo setting doing Dylan. If live or in the studio I was asked by the producer for more bottom out would come a Music Man or G&L etc. These are all paint brushes that I choose for the task. Yes, you can use anything but I might not choose to.

Perhaps the OPs question comes from huge appreciation, or he listens and plays only certain forms of music, or he heavily eqs his amp to compensate.

Bashing? Not really. I own a '51 ri & a '57 ri. I've been playing bass since 1966. I might have heard a few P-basses used by the greats. Just saying.:)
