I learned on a 5, my first was a 5, I'm glad I went that way because I learned how versatile a 5 string can be. Only problem is I refuse to buy a 4 string ever now, because they feel unnatural to me, I did own a 4 string in between, couldn't stand it.

It's 2013 and we're still having this debate? Why are we still acting like 5 strings are something new? If I had a child when I first bought a 5 string that child would be like 17 years old or more. LOL!!!!!

Me, I've been thinking about a 5 string for a while now. I started playing bass listening to Muse, and Wolstenholme downtunes to D a heck of a lot. This made absolute sense to me when I was learning his lines. Downtuning seemed pretty logical- but when I started trying to create my own lines, it often seemed counterintuitive. I know it works well for a lot of people, but I never worked well with it- I (try to) play a lot of chords and weird chord structures and it can get confusing sometimes/lead to awkward fingerings (often my own fault, I'll admit).
So I like my lines low and growly, but I hate downtuning. Seems a little backwards, I know, because low D = mega growl, but I feel like classic tuning with some more low end is gonna be perfect for me.

Here it is. I'm happy that I FINALLY got it - I've been wanting an Ibanez SR505 for at least a year.
I think I read about it in one of the forums here (either that or someone said it to me in person), but I wanna get two identical 6-string sets so I can tune on BEADG and EADGC. Reason being; I like the versatility of a five, BUT I'm not a fan of the neck width of a six. Is that unusual?

I had a an SR505 and was never happy with the B string low end, up the neck was fine. Play it and see if you like it. other than the low "C" it was a great bass
Me too. But the SRA505 (now 550, I think) is a very different story. Great B string.
