Set of strings for gigs only?

Hi there,

We all know bass strings dont come cheap. I was thinking of bying a new set of Elixirs, which I will use only for gigs (in my case - once/twice a month). For rehearsals, I will use my old Elixirs, which are about a year now... they give quite a smudgy sound nowadays.

I will change with the new set 2-3 days before each gig to avoid detuning while on stage, then take them off

What do you think about that idea? After all, drummers do that with their cymbals

What causes a lot of the "dead string" sound is the metal fatigue. Tensioning and retensioning the strings is similar to bending a bit of metal over and over. Eventually it's going to break. And you're going to be releiving the tension on your neck and retensioning it too. Me, I'd just buy new strings when they're needed.

In 30 years of gigging I've never heard of a drummer having a practice set and a gig set of cymbals unless they're one of the few really good drummers who use different cymbals in different rooms due to sound changes.

It is a cost of playing. ^ has some good points. You will kill the new strings by restringing. try cheaper strings. and change once every 1-2 months or so.

I change my 5 string Chromes every 2 months. yeash.

+1 to both the above. More practical to put a new set on, and wipe your strings down after every session.
