I believe having a clear mental image of what ones instrument sounds like direct through a decent mixing console and studio quality headphones can serve as a reference for finding a reasonable approximation of flat response from a given rig.
For me, finding that is how I can move to the tone I want by controlling and playing the instrument.
The amp controls may have to assume positions that seem unintuitive, but trust your ears! IMHO, dealing with a passive Fender is easy compared to an upright!
