setting up the ultimate bass synth :D

Industrial radio picked up where Peavey left.
Not sure it's perfect as far as catching playing subtilities but I think they upped the standards since your Peavey.

I plan on ordering one of these in 2012 depending on the tax return damage !

Also if any lefties are curious about the Industrial Radio bass, they are now taking orders for left handed models. Build time is 12 weeks.

Here is my synth setup live. Modular doesn't really have Any program memory options, so I went with the Axon into a Moog Slim Phatty. My bass has a graph tech system installed.

I can say that it does work live, very well actually. I had to spend countless hours tweaking the axon, and discovered that flat wounds track better than round wounds....at least for me. The result is a system that I can use live, and Moog has been great working with me on getting the Slim up to speed for this type of application. The Industrial Radio seems great, however, their lack of customization/retrofit makes it an expensive test to see if it would really be worth the switch.

I have also seen the Keith McMillan box, but again, it's rather expensive to test out just to see if I get better results. Many people talk about latency, and it is there, but it's manageable, especially with practice. I'll post a link to a live show or some sounds shortly, to show my success.

Here's a rough tracking of a Beatles tune. The tracking issues are me playing sloppily, as this was a scratch track, and I was trying some stuff out: Look what I just found on http://soundcloud.com/camerononbass/022112-jam-project-we-can-work

This is a cover of an old sneaker pimps song I did for my cousin. The bassline is a sine wave that I created by just using the filter, and fine tuning it to be in pitch. The melody is a synth patch, and the solo at the end is just wanking. I'd need to adjust the release so the notes don't cut off so quickly to better mimic a real instrument: http://soundcloud.com/camerononbass/allbasssneaker/s-5w7C4

Starting at 5:45 I dial in some synth: http://soundcloud.com/camerononbass/baby-im-a-star-live-martins

You can hear the slight latency, however, I'm using double thumb technique, and it does well enough tracking my subtleties.

Bass synth used for the whole song, mixed with real bass at times: http://soundcloud.com/camerononbass/use-me-live-martins

Bass Solo starts at 6:35

Again, there are issues, but definitely useable.

Thoughts??

How did you set the Moog to get it to track well? I've been experimenting with running my Cyberbass into my Little Phatty, but the Phatty has been giving me trouble - it seems to be very picky about what kind of MIDI signal it will accept.

Amos at Moog programmed me "omni" mode since each string sends out midi simultaneously. Initially I was having trouble where I can only play on the channel associated with each string so I was only getting one string playing at a time. Omni mode allowed the slim phatty to essentially listen to all of my strings simultaneously so I can actually play my bass.

The axon is where I had to do most of the work. It took me quite a while to get all the input trigger sensitivities set right for each string as well as the note trigger level and the cut off point. Since the company is out of business there's no one that I could talk to to determine how each parameter affected the other. I'm still in the dark about a few things but I think I've got it to a pretty decent place.

How does the cyber bass send its midi signal

The Cyberbass lets you choose how the MIDI data comes out, but some modes work better than others. The mode that works the best has each string output on a different MIDI channel. It sounds like the omni mode on the Phatty would fix my problem. Did you have to send the unit in to be programmed?

My thoughts? Awesome. Moog slim phatty and the new minitaur have everything that I want in a bass synth, and I'm beginning to wonder, because while my setup is starting to sound really cool, I'm going to end up spending more on effects than the cost of a slim phatty or minitaur which I would use for many different applications. I was planning on picking one or the other up anyway this year, except for the fact guitar center sent me an e-mail today telling me that they're not hiring me.

Amos,

When you say open up the filter do you mean use the slim's audio processing to run my dry bass through the unit as an external audio source?

Other than that, I can change the filter settings on any patch to be more "open" but that sound will vary by patch.
