The idea started with a TBer that had complained about their fuzz sound coming through the PA sounding like crap. On further analysis, it was deduced that without the bass amp speaker to attenuate out the crap high frequencies the fuzz was generating, the fuzz pedal had been producing those sounds all along. That got me to thinking about my rig, since I play primarily direct to PA and I like to experiment with the occasional fuzz sound blended in, but wasn't liking the results either.

Thus, the Micro Screaminator. Thanks to my mad scientist tendencies, I love the -inator suffix, and it seemed appropriate considering the Thumpinator stops thumps, the Screaminator stops screams.

I don't know how many people may find such a thing useful, but I am liking it.

So what frequency is the cutoff for the highs?

This whole Thumpinator and Screaminator business is really setting my brain in motion. If they make both in one pedal, I'm sold.

After my EQ experiments this week, I'm totally sold on the concept of removing "unused" frequencies from my signal. This is awesome.

5kHz is the cut-off.

You can request Max to build both into the same pedal. As with anything else, if you will pay for it, he will be build it.

I may have to do just that.

Off to the basement to play with the EQs again. All this experimenting will hopefully get me to the point of being aware enough about my effects to be able to actually know what I need.

And I ordered an AY-2 Max had in stock. (His last one in stock he said, in case anyone might be interested in that pedal.)

He'll just have to build more, cuz the AY-2 is the bomb, makes my bass sound like 4 very different creatures.

I plan to get a custom multi pedal from Max soon-

mThump, AY-2, Ray, Red Dragon & mScreamo maybe his loop logic for good measure

I actually inquired with Max about a custom build. A dual-compressor with tone-shaping abilities. He was kind enough and we had a dozen of emails back and forth. He said he could build whatever I want, and given his track record I would believe that.
But for now my idea is on hiatus.

Then I found out about the AY-2. At first I was skeptical when the word midscooping was thrown around. But then I looked at specs of the NE-1. In shallow setting scooping the high-mids is what I need. I don't want any growl but some thumb. (And ironically I also bought a micro-thumpinator. :) what's in a name?)

And now I have GAS for a m:_D2 (seems like a practical tool) and a micro-Comp for the future.
First I'll have to see how awesome the micro-Thumpinator and AY-2 is. :bassist:

I hope Max isn't thinking about building delay pedals...

Because I sure have custom build ideas for delays. :)
(need money)

While I can't directly appreciate [sfx] as I don't own any, the guy was cool enough about me (noobishly) ripping off his Thumpinator by pointing out where I could improve/fix it. Turned out to be a good build -- the next one will be better after I imply his advice.

...the EWS BMC that sits awkwardly on my board at present. ....

Speaking of which, I do wish all tiny pedal makers arranged their connectors like Max does ... wouldn't half tidy up my board.

So I just tried to re-arrange this:

post-220-0-94112200-1340996013.jpg

Putting the BMC into that gap after the tuner to make space at the end of the chain for another (as yet not purchased) pedal.

No way would it fit.

The clash of jackplugs between the high-input low-output BMC and it's low-input high-output neighbours stopped it happening, but another sfx pedal would have fit fine (okay, clash of power plug with the hustle drive above but that's another story.)

So why can't all these guys do things the same way ? Here's a selection of the tiny pedal makers that are most important to me (yes, I am biased) and where they line up on either side of the divide.

low-input high-output
SFX
TC electronics
Lovepedal (in and out are both higher than the others, might still clash)
MythFX

high-input low-output
EWS
Mooer

Hmmm ... not clear cut but it looks like low-input high-output is in the majority.

I suppose I'll just HAVE to go for all all-[SFX] board :)
