Oh yes, actually. IIRC he said the new design ended up causing more problems than it solved, so he was going to drop the redesign for the time being.

I have been bothering Max too much with all my questions... Regarding the Red Dragon, I have the custom, 2-channel, always on one. The tone controls on that are the "ultra-tone," same as in the B3, confirmed by Max. And the website says that as well. However it doesn't mention that about the tone on the regular Red Dragon Pedal. Anyone know if that pedal has the Ultra-Tone or something different? I was considering it because I would like the ability to bypass it. But even clean, the dual dragon sounds awesome.

I'm fairly sure I got confirmation of that from Max at the time the Red Dragon changed from a 2-knob pedal to 3-knob design. I'll see if I can find the quote later.

EDIT: could have sworn Max confirmed that somewhere, but I can't find it now, sorry. It seems highly likely though, even so. The sequence of events was:
1. Max does 2-knob RD (gain + vol)
2. Customer requests dual RD with ultra tone
3. Max finds that works well
4. 3-knob RD appears soon after

Maybe if Max split out the pedal functions. One pedal could simply a crossover splitter. Then mate it with a Micro Mixer on down the way. Not as convenient as one pedal, but considering there is no other option for doing this sort of thing, it might be worth the cost.

As far as I can remember, the sequence is not exactly right. This should be closer to what happened:

1. Max does 2-knob RD (gain + vol)
2. Max thinks that a tone control would be a nice idea.
3. He tried a few options. Eventually, he decided for an Ultra-Tone-like solution.
4. The micro-RD production switches to a 3 knobs version.
5. Customer requests dual RD. Max builds it using UT as it is the standard for the RD.

I may be wrong, but this is more or less as I remember it.

BTW, Ultra-Tone is nothing special. Essentially, it is a Big-Muff tone control tuned in a way that doesn’t create a scooped sound (i.e. at 12:00 the frequency response is roughly linear).

Hi bongomania,

Yes, your recollection is correct. There were other tests with other solutions but essentially everything went as you said.

I ordered a new prototype circuit board that, finger crossed, should be the final one. With the new version, the assembly should be simpler. The previous version on X&M took ages to assemble - I had to find a simpler solution. Apart from some small improvements, the circuit is essentially the same.

I don't think I'll make a X-Over only version. I suspect no many people would be interested and the cost wouldn't be that lower.

I may decide to produce a "lite" version with fixed frequency and without mixer but I'm not entirely sure about it.

Uh...Max? I'd have to politely disagree with that first statement. I'm getting to a point where I have to have it. That ultra tone control does wonders for my uhhh, tone. So far the dual Red Dragon has upped the bar for tone on my upright, Kala U-Bass, and both my stingrays (haven't put my P-bass through it yet in a live situation but will soon). Still waiting for my micro EQ, and waiting to see how much left over cash I will have for selling off other pedals and paying for a custom build, and I will be ordering more, and toying with custom orders. I thought the GAS was subsiding then Caeman had to go and find thAt dual Red Dragon for me...grrrr.
