Found on eBay for $78! Ordered. The Babicz's are twice the price. Thanks for the tip. I've looked at some Hipshot bridges before, but not for my SG. I'll also take @Craig4003's suggestion to consider medium scale strings.

I put the Hipshot on my '68 EB-3, only because I needed to be able to use a quickly removable and replaceable mute. Plus the factory mute was pushing the strings out of tune just enough to make it a no-go for my needs (I like the Fump mute/ doesn't affect tuning).
I have a Babicz that I've moved from one bass to another, currently residing as part of an upgraded Squire Jazz. I haven't been as happy with the Babicz as I originally expected, but it was never used on the Gibson bass.

It is my understanding that the original strings Gibson shipped on the SG (in 2013, at least) are 45-105. Medium scale GHS Bass Boomers come that gauge. Even their recently lengthened short scale string sets are too light. I do not want to have to replace/refile the nut.

Does anyone know if there are any alnico replacement pickups that can be easily put in a Gibson SG bass?
With the stock pickups, turning down the knobs a bit helps, but I'm basically an alnico guy.
I was thinking something like the pickups in the new Epi Thunderbird VintagePRO (since, as I understand it, the Gibson SG bass uses Thunderbird pickups).

Yep, my Sentell Unmudbucker has loads of Alnico clarity.
Several folk have asked me for a sound clip. I haven't forgotten, I'm just a bit lazy. I'll get to it!
What's the deal with the Unmudbucker? Is it also high output like the original mudbucker, or is it a regular-sized and output pickup (a la the current SG bass neck pickup, but alnico) just using the mudbucker-sized cover?
Might be what I'm looking for, so any other impressions or details would be appreciated

I think the phrase "high output" is a bit misleading. The Sentell has a healthy output, but what's really important is the tone. The basic architecture is the same as the original Gibson mudbucker (sidewinder with poles), but the Sentell has a sane amount of windings, and AlNiCo poles instead of steel screws with a bar magnet underneath. This results in a tone that's worlds away from a traditional mudbucker.

I forgot to mention, the strings are fresh D'Addario Flex Steels. And it's an Epi EB0 body with a homemade 32" scale three-piece maple neck and Macassar ebony fretboard. 500k volume pot, three-way switch.
