So I still wanted to try flats on one of my EBs. I remembered yesterday that I have Labella Beatle Bass flats on my Epi Viola. The length was right, so I put them on my EB-0 to see how they sound. Pretty good. Definitely a darker tone. The 250K volume pot might be too low. It might need a 500K I think.
In any case, I found out afterward that I guess you're not supposed to put them on a regular bass. In fact, it says right on the Labella site to not substitute these for a regular medium set or they will break. But I'm struggling to understand why.
I took them back off just to be safe. But does anyone here know what the deal is?

They do not say they will break. You're getting mixed up with their warning against thru-body loading. They say they won't fit, which you've proven wrong. Just use them if you like them.
Damn, you're right lol. I just checked the site again. That's weird, I could have sworn I read something about the strings breaking. I must be confusing this with something I read somewhere else. Thanks for the help.

I stand partially corrected: the breaking part isn't on the company website product page, but it is there on the copy they sent Elderly, alright.

The difference the 500k makes on a short scale bass with flats is small. You will get a tiny bit of more click if you keep the tone wide open. I'd rock it the way it is. On the other hand one persons small change is a big change to another.

I put mini clovers on my sg and now it's 6 lb. 13 oz. My back just gave me a big thank you hug.

In the flats department, I had Pyramids on my 2010 SG but thought the E string was a bit dull so switched them out for Rotosound 77's, same gauge (40's). The E has a lot more lows to it, but is a bit floppy. I do like the clank of them, though.

Were they screw position compatible, or did you need to drill new mounting holes?
The tuners need new holes drilled for the screws but I've got them mounted without, so no new holes were made.

They are still being sold by some outlets. So either all of this is mistaken and Gibson/Epiphone are just really bad at running websites. Or they really have discontinued them and they are just still selling off their old remaining stock. Gotta be one or the other.

Not necessarily. They've been re-named "SG" by Gibson/Epi. But not by me. They'll always be EB-___ as far as I'm concerned.

Has anyone ever replaced the bridge pickup in their EB-3 with a Thunderbird pickup? They look like they could be surface mounted without issue.
Well...That's an EB, not an EB-3. Typical GC screw up.
I seriously considered trying this with my EB-0 at one point. I may still try it if I ever get my hands on another EB.
