I finally got around to making a bone nut for my EBO. I had made one from Bubinga years ago when the original plastic one chipped but it never looked right.
I'm in the process of fixing up a 1969 EB-0 that a bandmate found abandoned (I know!). It was modified very early on with a single coil bridge pickup and it has a 3 way switch. After cleaning it up and doing some fret leveling and other adjustments it's basically playable. However, there are two issues remaining with this bass that have me stumped:
- On the E string, when I play a B (7th fret) the output is about 40% quieter than all the other strings/notes. I have no idea how to fix this.
- The 3-way switch won't stay in position. It flips back to middle position about a half-second after switching to neck or bridge position.
I suppose I could put in a new switch but I wondered if there was anything I could try before throwing in the towel. The mystery (quiet B) is something I can't even find in searches, so I don't know how to approach the problem.

Is this problem apparent when the bass is not plugged into an amp? If so the cause is mechanical.
If it sounds fine unplugged, and only exhibits this symptom through an amp, then the issue is electronic.
That is an excellent question. It's only noticeable when played through an amp. Any idea of how to fix this? I have not done any electronics work on this or any other bass.
Is it only that one amp? Try the bass plugged in through anything else and see if the problem persists

Good! Electronic problems are easier to address than something inherent in the structure of the bass.
Second question: does the issue happen only with the neck pickup, only the bridge, both, or some combination?
Most of the finish wear was there when I bought it in 79 when the bass was only 11 years old...
If you can find one, go for it. I made a piece of mahogany to fit under the bridge, then bolted it down. No more tilt
I'm checking out an older Epi EB-3 tonight after work. This thread did me in. lol

When you said older, I thought 60's or 70's...
I don't know if I've played one from that era.I have a Les Paul Tribute, so I imagine the neck would be similar?
I ended up getting it. I'm in the process of setting it up. It was in a gig bag in a closet for about 10 years. It's really clean. Pretty much unplayed. The bridge. I don't know what to say. It's a work in progress. The low E string volume is really low for some reason. Trying to figure it out. The pic is from the listing.

Nice find! Good luck with the bridge. When I bought a 2013 SG new in '14, the first thing I did was replace the oil derrick bridge with a Hipshot Supertone. Loved it. I gave that SG away when I scored a Week One 2007 SG Special. The original owner had already replace the bridge with a Babicz, so that saved me some time and money. The original bridge came with the bass as a pile of parts in a baggie. I immediately donated it to the local landfill. Adios, mf.
I think the Hipshot is definitely in my future. Lol.
