SG & EB Bass Club

OK after I posted a picture of my 65 EB-3 the other day I started thinking about how I had taken the choke out of the circuit and decided to try it with it back in since taking it out is easily reversible. So I hooked it back up today and it sounds ever better and is more easily controllable. The reason I took it out in the first place was that I didn't seem to be getting enough bottom in position three, both pickups with choked neck pickup (I know an EB-3 without enough bottom, haha!). So I experimented today with the volumes and found the best sound with plenty of bottom as long as I didn't dime the bridge pickup and just left the neck on full, it sounds nice and chunky with the La Bella flats. Either the bridge pickup completely blanks out the neck at a certain position (about 9 on the volume control) or the volume control has a short right near full but it looks like a real pain to replace it so at least for now I'll leave it alone, now I'm wondering whether to get it refinished, it was originally cherry.


Edit: I have now found i like the sound the best with neither volume on full, i back the neck off just enough to allow the bridge to predominate, i think the bridge pickup is putting out most of the sound with the neck backed off now but i like the sound.

My 2014 Gibson Sg special 120 anniversary before it was stolen. I miss this bass BIG TIME. I WANT IT BACK so bad. This bass made playing so easy.also being the Mike Watt fan I am I can't even watch his vids on YouTube cause I miss my Gibson so much. I love that shortscale and the close string spacing. I'm actually looking for one just like this or even a standard.i am a Fender guy and love my Fenders but for what I am currently doing lately with bass, my Gibson is very needed and missed!

Beautiful EB/SGs everyone.
I'm still loving my SG and trying to work it into more of my bands songs. The SG has a very woody tone that I really like, a completely different sonic flavor than my Fenders (that's the whole point right?). It is also different than the original EB-3's due to the Thunderbird pups and simpler tone circuit.

Did a gig with my new (to me) SG Special last week with my 60's/70's cover band. Lot's of compliments. So comfortable to do a two set gig with this bass. Also love having the short scale on a stage that's tight space wise.

I'm still hearing less oomph with my E string and also my D string. No one else seems to notice it but I can hear it. Hence I've ordered a Dimarzio Model One and some short scale d'addario Chromes (I currently have it strung with cut down to fit long scale Chromes). I'm hoping the Dimarzio and new strings will help with the E and D string output.

I also moved the strap button to the app horn. Much more comfortable to play that way....and solved the neck dive issues. I also did my usual trick of nuts on the end of the strings to keep the silks off the bridge saddles.

I just installed the Model One on mine and I love it. With the stock pup it sounded terrible, no oomph at all. I guess they are called mudruckers for a reason.

And btw, raising the poles on the original pup doesn't seem to have any effect at all.

Regarding the,pole pieces....I believe the neck pick up pole screws are for show only? Not sure of the bridge.....

When I had mine installed on my last SG (which had the same issue as yours), the shop had to remove a small bit of wood to fit it properly. My current SG doesn't have the weak E issue. I seem to remember reading somewhere on TB that the problem can be remedied by adding a bit of foam under the bass side of the neck pup. I like the sound of the Model One, though, so you can't go wrong either way.

Just noticed that you moved the button, but I'm not sure it looks so secure and that's def weak part of the body. I'd love to cure the neck dive, but I'm hesitant to follow your lead. Does it seem ok?

It's not going anywhere. I also used a dab of two part epoxy on the screw (use that trick on all my strap screws). Plenty strong. Added the yellow foam bit since the last photo was taken....looks a bit more like the strap button belongs there on the horn.

Hi all,

Just giving a heads-up to the members looking to replace the stock pickups on an SG bass. Curtis Novak makes several options for both the bridge and neck pickups. I have his bisonic pickup at the neck and a Thunderbird-style pickup at the bridge. Both are terrific to my ears.

I haven't heard the DiMarzio offering, so am not able to compare. But for those looking for a brighter, yet still grindy sound from their SG, you might check out Curtis' offerings.
