SGD Lutherie Pickups

I just wanted to point out something about the logos on the pickups. I had a couple of people comment that the logo is too big on the Jazz pickups.

It does look kind of overwhelming when you look at the line art graphic on the site. But in person it's very subtle, and you really have to angle the pickup into the light to see it well.

It's not printed on the surface, but is actually etched with a laser which forms faint lines in the plastic. So it's more of a different in texture than an actually graphic on the pickup case.

As you can see in these photos, if it's not directly in the sun light, you can hardly see it. And even then it has to be on the right angle.

I've got to chime in on this thread. I just finished building a Warmoth 5-string fretless bass with 3 SGD wide-aperture passive dual-coil pickups in Bartolini BC5 shape (same as P2) and I finally got everything wired up correctly.

In short, the pickups are AMAZING. I've finally found my ideal passive pickups. They keep up with my Lane Poor pickups as far as clarity and midrange sweetness, and they give my Villex pickups a run for the money in the way they track the fundamental. All 3 pickups have a balanced tone signature and rich, warm detail.

If I ever decided to sell my prized Lane Poor pickups, I would order a set of SGDs to replace them immediately.

I've got to give lots of credit to SGD for working with me to create a set of pickups that matched my custom configuration. David has been amazing to deal with, and is always responsive to e-mail. He took the time to answer my questions and I am grateful for his assistance.

The logo is not "too big" at all. I think it's very subtle and tasteful. In fact, I would almost recommend making it stand out a bit more.

Any chances to ear soundclips tos this bass?

I always wondered what could be the subtilities between pickups position and this looks like a good "test bass" for that.

I've listened to the sound clips and loved the tone. But I couldn't hear a big difference bewteen them.

I always thought a narrow spaced humbucker would sound more like a P pickup, since on the P each coil is sensing a smaller piece of the string and the series configuration would give the fuller sound, but looks like there is no correlation.

Maybe it's less on the pickup configuration and more on its position...:confused:

The wides sound a lot fulller, especially the neck pickup. The narrows are more focused sounding, and have more of an upper mid peak. The narrow neck has a thick tone, but with a tighter low end.

Jazz bass pickups are narrow aperture. P bass pickups are actually wider, because the coil is wider.

I think my wide neck pickup sounds similar to a P bass, but with more open mids and highs.

The narrows are like thicker Jazz pickups.
