SGD Lutherie Pickups

That was the bridge pickup of a Neo Jazzbucker. It's in a passive bass with 500k controls, into a Roland VM-3100Pro digital mixer, and recorded in TC Works SparkXL audio editor.

That was on my '87 Ibanez SR-885LE which has a basswood body and maple neck. I have an aluminum Hipshot A bridge on the bass.

At this time the bass had V-V-T and the two switches.

What type/gauge strings were you using on this recording?

Did you have to crank up the preamp (on the mixer) when switching to from series to parallel mode? Also, I'm assuming that you had the tone pot wide open on this recording? It would be interesting to hear the same bridge pickup straight to the output jack; have you tried this?

I have D'Addario XLs on the bass, gauges 45-130. I just switched the switch and played live. That wasn't edited together.

When I test pickups I have it wired right to the jack with alligator clips. I don't notice much of a difference when using 500k pots, but I'm sure there's a little difference.

Wow, the volume between the three settings seems very even to my ears. I really would have expected quite a drop in volume when you switched from series to parallel and single mode. I am pleasantly surprised.

Cool...so, I was able to hear it straight to the output jack after all! :D

Is it possible to order two of your ND3-J4 bridge pickups - right next to each other - under one pickup cover?

I would be most interested in having coils A+D in series, A+D in parallel, C+D in series, and C+D in parallel.

This would be for a 4-string bass.

Sure. They would actually fit in either an EMG-35 size cover or a MM. I now also have the dual J style covers like on the Fender Deluxe P bass.

The pairs that would hum cancel would be A-B, A-D, B-C or C-D.

Also in a MM case I can fit a wide and narrow aperture pickup.
 
In theory something like that would work and could fit in an MM sized casing. Not sure how such a thin aperture would affect the tone.

Its the same bobbins as my Neo Jazzbucker. The narrow aperture makes it sound a lot like a single coil.

Just think of the thin Strat size humbuckers like the Duncan rails and Barden pickups.

Very good to know. I'd rather go for the EMG-35 size cover. Without the plastic cover, what would be the actual dimensions of the two ND3-J4 bridge pickups placed together as close as possible? I want to see if my luthier will make a wooden cover for the two pickups.

Not including true single coil modes, I think that would give me the possibility of having 24 possible hum cancelling combinations, but I am not sure how many of them I might actually use. Fun to think about. :)

For the EMG-35 cover (which is shorter than the actual ND3-J4), the size of each pickup would be 13.5mm X 73mm. So two wound require a space 27mm x 73mm, so figure 30mm x 75mm for shielding.

I actually mean to say that two J4s would fit into an EMG-40 case. I can make them sorter for the 35 case, but am limited by the mounting screw tunnels as far as how wide the coils can be when used this way.

This will be for a 4-string bass having 18mm string spacing (measured on string centers) at the bridge. I don't know if this fact makes any difference. I don't have to have an EMG-35 style cover, but I would like to keep it as small as possible.

That's 54mm, and the sensing area of the pickup is about 66mm, so you are good to go with the 30mm x 75mm size.

So, with the 30mm x 75mm size, what would be the exact distance from the center of blade A to the center of blade B, as well as the exact distance from the center of blade B to the center of blade C?

Would the tonality or output of the Neo Jazzbuckers change in any way by making them fit these parameters?

The distance from the center of each blade is 0.30" (7.62mm). That's the same distance as when they are in a J cover.

They should function exactly as usual.
 
Would it lower the resonant peak if you wind them more? If so, I would not want to loose the high end to gain amplitude. In fact, I have even wondered about going with two ND3-J4 neck pickups.

With the J4s there's not as much of a difference between the neck and bridge pickups as with the wide apertures. But the bridge pickup is wound with thinner wire. But you can use two neck pickups.
 
Has anyone tried using the the ND3-J4 in a Carvin LB76?

The dimensions of Carvin's pickup housings are the same as a 4-string Jazz pickup, but most 4-string Jazz pickups do not have a wide enough magnet to pick up all 6 strings, even on a narrowly-spaced 6er like the LB76. Carvin says their pickups can handle a total string spacing of 3.2", the ND3-J4 can go up to 3.0"...is that gonna be wide enough? Has anyone tried this yet?
