I ran into that with a local business. There's a contact link on their website. It's supposed to be an email link to the business, but it doesn't work. I had to cut&paste the email address from their site and send through my email.

In my case it had been working well until I switched from Outlook to Apple's Mail application on my Mac and something became misconfigured with the account settings. I was wondering why it's been so quiet since May!

There's nothing wrong with Apple computers, and OS X is way beyond Windows or Linux. It's based on BSD Unix NeXT/OPEN STEP. Watch some of the videos from NASA and you will see the guys sitting there with their Apple laptops. ;) I also run Windows 2000 & 7, 2 flavors of Linux and Haiku (Be OS) on my Mac. Yep I'm a geek.

I've been using Macs since the early 90s (System 7) and PCs since Windows 3.1, as well as Irix, Solaris, AIX, etc., and when I was working in graphics was the sys admin in many of the places.

This was clearly a problem of operator error! :hiding:

I had been using Outlook (and before that Entourage) on the Mac for a long time, and the latest version wasn't running very well since upgrading to Mac OS X 10.8. So I migrated to Apple's Mail, which required buying software to do the conversation from Outlook's mailbox format to standard mbox format. What happened was I didn't finish setting up the one account. It's not my main account, so I didn't notice at first that I wasn't getting any mail coming to it. The other 6 or so accounts were working fine.

Now I have about 200 emails to wade through and reply...

So I guess this unexpected batch of correspondence will put a dent in your recovery schedule, eh? Well, it's good to be busy, right? ;)

Whoa. Haiku? That's like…2 standard deviations above the average geek. Crazy! I haven't tried a real install of it, I just use the VM images of it every now and again. I've pretty much given up on using any other OS than OS X (it's just so well supported and the cocoa is nice), but Haiku is gorgeous and has great devs (judging by their attitude in IRC channels). (:

Don't worry about the emails, btw. Just get through it, do your best, and everything will be fine. (;

Haiku? You Haikrazy. I dual boot, with Windows 7 and various Debian distros. I also occasionally run Android in a VM. If I were heavy into recording or graphics design, I might consider a Mac, but it's not worth it for me and for what I do.

I don't hate on Macs; I was just trying to figure out what was meant by his comparison to the Fender 5-string.

Linux KXStudio distribution.
Has all the ease of Ubuntu and a s**tload of top quality recording and video editing software, and a low-latency realtime kernel.

and it's all free.

and it runs on PC hardware.

and you can keep Windows on the same machine and choose between Linux and Windows at boottime.

I used to run BeOS on one of my PPC Macs, back in the 90s. I liked it a lot. Haiku is just like it.

By the way, I can, but don't dual boot. I'm using Parallels desktop and VM Ware Fusion. I can also run Android apps, but I have no use for that. I like iOS a lot better.

But the point of why a Mac?, is never having to run Windows! It's an awful operating system. it looks nicer these days, but it's a PITA. Linux is kind of nice, in a clunky sort of way, but the GUI is primitive, and there's not a lot of GOOD software for it. Mac OS X is what Linux (and Windows) wants to be when it grows up. It's at 10.8.4 now, which is really version 18.4. Windows is at 7, and is still Win NT.

I run these other OSs so I know how to use them, and because it's fun. But I never use them for any real work.

Being the "computer guy" I'm constantly fielding questions from friends with PCs when things are not working as they should, which is on a weekly basis. (My Mac using friends have very few problems with their computers.)

I have to keep saying "hmmmm, I don't have any problems like that/didn't have to jump through those hoops/to use my printer/get on a network/synch my iPhone, etc." Windows does some agonizingly stupid things. lol But most PC users have no other point of reference so they think it's just the way computers are. They are supposed to be counterintuitive and overly complicated!

My (now ex) wife was so tired of her dad calling me for help with his Dell (had to reinstall his printer drivers every time he wanted to print), that she insisted he get a Mac. After a week of getting him adjusted to the new OS, I never heard from him again, as far as computer questions. Then he liked it so much he got an Apple Laptop. Macs just work. No dicking around needed.

As far as them being more expensive, yes, you can get dirt cheap PCs. But they generally don't have very long lifespans. The guitarist in one of the bands I play in has to get his wife a new laptop. Her two year old HP has many issues. The power jack is lose, the trackpad doesn't work well, and other things.

Meanwhile my son has a four year old Mac Book Pro, which was a refurb, and he uses it every day, all day long. Not a single thing has ever gone wrong with it, except when he spilled soda on it and a DVD got stuck in the drive. But we fixed that ourselves.

I use an early 2009 iMac, with 2.93 GHz, Core2Duo, 8 GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. It was also a refurb. It replaced my G4 tower which I bought in... 2001. So they might be expensive, but they last a ridiculously long time. This does everything I need from general computing, to Photoshop to Pro Tools/Cubase, etc.

And no pros use those "top quality recording and video editing software." Why is that? Compare the GIMP to Photoshop. You get what you pay for.

And Ubuntu has no ease of use. It's a kluge! I know people that use it for their main OS, and they have computer science degrees, and they go on and on about some of the stupid things about Ubuntu. I run it myself, so I agree. I like Debian a little better. I've run most of the Linux distros all the way back to Red Hat and PPC Linix and MK Linux.

Mac OS X is just like Linux on the inside, but with a very good window manager, and I can run both free Linux software (and even in X11) or real software like Photoshop and Pro Tools.

Lately I do a lot of recording in Garage Band. That's free too. :D OS X isn't free, but it was like $19 for the full version. I can live with that.
