Shaping a neck

By shaper, do you mean a shaper/router table? I ask because I always thought that I could get a round over bit with a big enough radius and just do each side of the back of the neck by holding it up to the fence and making a couple of passes. Then you would have a basic shape to go from.

Am I wrong?

Not wrong at all. In fact, there's at least one pictoral out there about doing that exact thing. The router absolutely must be table mounted, though.

Personally I don't mind the rasp work at all. Also, when you screw up with a rasp you might ruin the neck. When you screw up on a shaper / router powerful enough to spin a bit that big, you're likely to not only screw up the neck but a good number of your digits, too.

well, it is a 3hp motor with a custom made roundover. with a pass on each side of the neck it is shaped.

I looked for that pictorial Nateo but I couldn't find it. Would you by chance be able to point me in the right direction?
