I just made what should be the finishing touch on my “custom build” [Franken]bass.

I routed out the pickup cavity, installed a custom pickguard, and reinstalled the pickups in reverse configuration with black mounting screws.

The tonal consitancy across the fretboard is the best I’ve heard. I no longer have to remember to play closer to the neck to get a rounder sound with the D and G strings. I have been chasing this sound for a while and am very pleased. Does anyone else think the reverse configuration sounds better?

Let’s see yours!

IME: every single case! and for just the reasons you cite in your OP.

i don't why fender didn't "correct" this long ago. some of the same folks who encourage experimentation and technological advancement re: all things bass are some of the same folks who would say things like "it just doesn't look right" or "it's fine the way leo made it, originally." obviously: it's a superior arrangement on most instruments. anyway, great work...glad it turned out for you!

Thread revival - I'm bored and thinking of doing a bass build for the first time in a long time... J neck , p body with reverse pickup.

Question: does the stock pickguard template accommodate the reverse pickup fully? Or do you need to slide it up towards the neck a bit. I'd rather keep it at the exact position, just flipped...

You're right, and I think the coils may be full-size, like a normal humbucker. But the steel slugs are arranged like a split coil. Odd design--but sounds great!
Yes, the coils are full size. Thanks, I didn't really know how to explain that.
My Aria is at the tech's right now for some mods
- Adding a middle pickup and a separate control plate with on/off switches for each pickup
- Adding extra slugs to each coil, allowing each coil to sense all four strings
- Adding a push/pull switch to activate single coil mode
New Zealand began a four week lock-down yesterday so I won't get it back until mid-April but I'll make sure to post clips when I do!
