Yep, that's the problem - different beards, and various degrees of skin sensitivity.Everyone's face is different. My brother could probably get away with no shaving cream. My beard is much, much heavier and tougher, and not using shave cream is a recipe for disaster.
My beard is thick, coarse, and very tightly-curled. What has worked best for me after decades of shaving is cold water (it braces and tightens my skin and makes the hair stand up...YMMV), Edge Ultra Sensitive gel (colloidal oatmeal is its featured ingredient), Dollar Shave Club Humble Twin razors, and rinsing the cartridge with hot water to thoroughly clean it, then cold water before I bring it back to my face.
