Shipping a bass from Australia

I know this is a american bass forum,but....emm,hopefully I can find some oversea bass player here.
Hi is there any australian mates who happen to know how to ship a bass oversea?(I know UPS and FedEX can do that but they will ask me more than $500 for this:( )
I dumped my bass in a office of AustralianPost today, but they told me they has a lenght limitation of 105cm......but a packaged bass would be over 120cm long.
So is there any body has experience about shipping basses from australia?
Thanx
Dean
PS:it's a Spector Euro LX neckthrough model which I can't take the neck off:(

Gidday Deano! While the are a lot of US members here at TB, you'll find that there are a lot of international members too, so you should get an Aussie answer to your questions rather than one from a Jock living in the States!

If the bass has a bolt-on neck, have you considered taking it off to ship and get within the Australian post limit? The other thing to look into are freight forwarding companies. I don't have any names, but you should be able to search for them or else somebody else may have some names for you!

Say "Hello" to Collins St for me!

Take the neck off ;)

Im assuming thats not possible though, look for a good courier, I know DHL and TNT ship overseas from here.

It depends where you are shipping it to, but TBH it is going to cost you at least a couple of hundred dollars, maybe $150 at the cheapest.

I've used DHL to ship to Australia, but they only do commercial now. You could tell them you're shipping to a business over here and it'll be pretty cheap.
Or take the neck off the bass if it's a bolt on, and save even more $$.

TNT, UPS and DHL have quoted me like 500 whether to or from the USA -it seems they have cottoned onto all the money they can make from ebay sales and are milking it big time, raising their prices in the past few years. If you can find an outfit like shipito that will ship one for around 100 go for it - you won't find any cheaper than that. My bass coming from Staten Island to Adelaide next week is coming by USPS but thats with with the neck off.

Last bass I got from the USA with it's neck off was USD$120.

The last bass I got from the USA in a case came Fedex for AUD$225 and got here in 4 days.

The Fedex charges are the same regardless of which way it is traveling.

I got an ABN and then got an account with Fedex so I could get Commercial rates.

Hope that helps...

I use these guys. They have a few outlets around. I sent a Chapman Stick to LA, and it cost $96 two years ago. Just walked in and filled in the paperwork on the spot. Bloody Australia Post and their size limits.

US to Australia, use these guys.
