Shipping Damage: Lost For Words

If Reverb is willing to pay for repair (and if you're willing to go this route) - I would say contact Pat Wilkins.

He is a refin master - and he can easily repair the dents & dings damage in the process. He would be glad to give you a quote.

I'll look him up. I just emailed a few local places here in Houston. If they want to pay me to get it repaired then I'll get the entire body stripped and painted a color that Fender doesn't offer.

Yep, that's what I thought too.

I dented an old Ibanez guitar with similar gouges due to the exact same scenario.
The buyer probably grabbed the bass by the lower end of the neck (closer to the body) with just one hand, which is not a good place to clutch because of the uneven weight distribution. The body falls back into the case, and the lid slaps shut.

It's a common gouge to see on instruments, especially those with thin finishes and soft woods (looking at you, Ibanez!)

This Fender took a good hit though.
yeah I hit that little strap that holds the lid to the bottom and it closed the lid right on it , gat dammmit

I was gonna suggest that too - the original color is beautiful, but if a refin is in the cards, the sky is wide open for any other color you might want.

Especially if Reverb is willing to cover the cost. Best of luck to you - I hope something positive can come from all the trouble you've been through on this adventure.

Another Update:

The buyer does not want to repair and wants a refund. Reverb notified me that I must refund the buyer and that they will will cover the shipping back to me. They also requested that I get a repair estimate and that they will cover the repairs. If I do not want to get an estimate then they will give me a $150 shipping claim.

I basically responded back with I do not want the bass back because I sent a almost new bass out and now I'm getting a damaged bass back that I can't sell and have to run around town to get a repair estimate. I don't even know who does this type of work. I told them I question the SN and asked for a picture with the damage and the SN visible. I also told them I do not believe that the bass is stringed the way that I shipped it. I pointed out a bunch of small details. I'll see what they say.

Sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through just to get the bass back to the condition it was in (when you shipped it),
And then you have to relist it (to sale).
Total bummer!

Yeah I highly recommend, taking pictures and video before it’s packed and Also take pics of the pack job and as well as a visible serial. This way if the shipping process is at fault it’s documented and the buyer knows you didn’t hose them either. It also stops less than honorable buyers because the documentation is more bullet proof.

I might just get it repaired and keep it. I'm not about to buy the Ultra Jazz anytime soon. One guy I emailed said the entire body has to be stripped so that the repairs won't show. Something about this metallic finish Fender used. If I go that route, I want like a dark Lime green finish. I also thought about like a Prince color purple.

Sounds like Reverb is working hard to maintain a positive experience for both parties so that they continue using their service. This thread, along with others like it, make me think twice about it though.

I've sold ~30 pieces of gear and bought as much/more on Reverb. In my experience, they were very accommodating form both a buyer & seller perspective. I've had to make a couple claims on repairs and items not not as described for things I've purchased, and they resolved them quickly and easily. I haven't had much grief as a seller, but...again, I take video of myself testing and packing items that are either higher value or most likely to arrive damaged from shipping/handling.

I recently sold a bass through Reverb. I also had it list here. It is a Fender Jazz Elite so it came with a hard case. I placed the bass in it's hard case and used all the original packing material that I had when I bought the bass brand new.

However, here is the issue. I get a message from the buyer that the bass had this extensive damage that was not there when I shipped it. I can't imagine a bass getting this kind of damage inside a hard case. I shipped through UPS. Someone from UPS had to have opened the package to inspected and dropped the bass of something. I'm at a lost for words. I wiped the bass down before inserting into its case. I can't believe this.

Below are pictures of the bass when I shipped.

I suspect buyer probably has a similar bass and trying to switch bodies and return it with his damaged body..

Yeah, taking pics/vids of the packaging and product would go a long way in bolstering one's case, both on the buyer and seller sides, if you have to go the remote purchase route. I guess I'm still old school. I would want to play it first, regardless...

I definitely feel that way with basses - at least if I can try it first, I would much prefer to. Just making the point that reverb is mostly convenient/painless if you take the appropriate steps to protect yourself. Someone else mentioned 'unboxing videos' and I've done those as well. Especially with expensive items or boxes that showed up looking less than healthy from handling.

Seller is not getting accused of sending damaged goods, so pictures and videos are moot at this point. Reverb seems to be accepting damage in shipping. Still a tough situation.

Yeah, this is like being in a car accident that was the other guy's fault. Insurance pays to have it fixed, but you still have to go through the PITA of getting it fixed and then own a car that has been in an accident and is never quite the same.

Realistically couldnt you just list that bass for $150 bucks less than you did originally?....I'm sure it would sell, a lot of people dont really care about a few dings, mostly when it plays great and it means getting a good deal.

Refinishing the whole thing seems a bit excessive and will def cost more than $150.
