UPS also managed to make a net operating profit of more than $6 billion last year.

Based on how much capital at risk and expense?

Usually when this sort of stat is trotted out, if you do the math it becaomes eveident the company would be better off firing everyone, selling every asset, putting it into a guranteed bond (better yet gold) and never doing a day’s work or suffering another accusation of microaggression ever again.

Numbers without context are pure manipulation, and most people fall for it every time. Then they vote. That is why everything costs so much more now.

No.

1) Plummeting buying power of most currencies reflected primarily in cost of groceries, services like shipping, and luxury goods like musical instruments and 2) stagnant wages are what’s inhibiting most people’s purchases.

See: almost every EBMM or MIA Fender thread. 1/20 posts ~”Geez they cost so much now!”

(Shrivel-Up)

Wait till Fender announces that all standard scale non-Custom Shop production models will be 32".

I’m always (I have a background in corporate accounting and finance) suspicious of numbers that are reported “in the aggregate” or “on average.”

Yeah, same here (with the background). I once ran a project to put together an "Employee Portal" that simply aggregate a bunch of links. a total cost of around $1000 to put together and minimal ongoing costs.

Later that year, "Employee Portal" showed up on a list of "Company Provided Perks" and was assessed $1000 per employee as part of their "benefits."

I just shipped the last cab I’ll probably ever ship. 100 lbs halfway across the US. I just hope it arrives in one piece.

I remember back in my FedEx days when I had a huge discount, I shipped a vintage SVT AND matching 8x10 cab from Arkansas to Oregon I believe. Also shipped a B15 to Hawaii. Those days are over. It would cost more than the item itself these days.

I've also noticed the the "Amazonification" of everything sold online expecting free shipping or to purchase a "shipping membership" for discounts. If I list a separate shipping charge, my sales drop by probably 75%, but if I absorb the shipping cost but list it as free, I can charge a higher price and it still sells.

It is even worse here on talkbass where almost 100% of the classified sales someone starts b!t$%*^& about having to pay shipping fees and wanting a friends and family discount for complete strangers online.

Yes, shipping is insane. I think FedEx (air at least) will cease to exist because of the absurd shipping rates. I am a former FedEx employee.

Not to beat a dead horse, but that $900 was for not only Sat delivery, but FIRST OVERNIGHT. That’s the premium of premiums. When 12:00 pm just won’t do and you need it by 10:00 am. It’s absurd because it arrives at the station at the same time as the other freight IME. They just have the driver deliver it first or send another person out to get those delivered before there’s an exception. Total rip-off.

Unless you really need it by 10AM. It’s a choice, and for some a valuable and welcome option at nearly any price… though you could probably hop an airplane with it and deliver it yourself for less if for some reason that seemed fun.

We’re talking about things nobody “needs”, usually bought on debt incurred at huge cc rates. In other words total impulse buys. If people have to start doing math or shopping for best shipping quotes, the impulse dies.

With that in mind, if ours wasn’t such a debt-addicted instant gratification culture - where bragging on those indebted impulse buys gets “likes” rather than derision - the price of everything would plunge.

It’s just another form of voting, and the majority speaks loud & clear while the rest of us are just along for the long ride downhill.

BTW I’m not typing at either of you per se, just soloing on your riffs.

Shipping costs have definitely killed online selling of low cost basses for me. I have an old Washburn that no one locally is interested in, but the shipping would increase the cost by around 80%. I also have a nice ABG that is cost prohibitive to ship due once it is safely boxed in the hardshell case. Most folks are not going to absorb shipping costs of $150-$200 unless it is a rare item that cannot be found locally, or it is a very high end item that costs many times more than the shipping.

Perspective: Last round of delivery driver strikes/union negotiations resulted in an announcement from one of them (UPS I beleive) that they now are averaging $125,000 and up for total annual salary and benefits outlay per employee.
Need we say more?

Good. I hope they negotiate for 200k next time. Take it out of the stock buyback budget.

My favorite is when it's arrives locally in time to make the delivery truck in 1 day, then sits at the distribution center for 2 days because I paid for 3-day delivery. Does it really cost less to ship it overnight and then hold it for 2 more days?

No it doesn’t. IME, it just will sit in the building waiting to be loaded on a delivery truck. Why deliver it today when it can be delivered tomorrow kind of deal. Sometimes the routes are heavy for that day, so there is a reason.

When I was doing it, I’d get off every box I could during the week but if it’s Friday and I have a bunch of Mondays, they aren’t getting delivered unless I’m already going there. Unless it’s like say a 4x10 cab…I’m getting rid of that asap so I don’t have to keep loading it every morning.

Did I mention I had a guitar case with Joe Walsh’s name on it once? Lol

If you get it when you expected it, why would that bother you?

Also, the carriers utilize their "dimensional weight" calculations. I always pack a bass in the smallest-possible box. Once you go over the magical 48" length, things get pricey. I also usually double box my shipments and make durned sure the bass is 100% solid/stable, with zero chance of it moving around whatsoever. A lot of times, I will remove the lower strap button so when the carrier drops it, it doesn't get shoved up into the body (btdt with a ton of incoming basses).
If I don't have a box that suits my needs, dimension-wise, I fabricate one. Hot glue is my friend, but a few buyers have cursed me for how difficult it is to "free the bass". Waaaaaahhhhhhh.
To avoid oversized fees when you want to sell a bolt-on-neck bass that isn’t in a hardshell case: Take off the neck and wrap all of the parts well. I received a Fender Aerodyne from Japan, and the box wasn’t much larger than the body of the bass. Free shipping by FedEx, and it arrived within two days of shipment (yes, I was amazed by that).
