shopclass project AKA first bass build

WOOHOOO!! i got a pre-slotted badass II bridge taken off of a fender highway one jazz bass, so it has multiple slots. never used. got it for $80 on ebay. i'm happy. also, i reshaped the top horn, came out a lot like a rickenbacker by accedent. no big deal, just will have to thin out the bottom horn as well. i just home it is big enough to safely get a strap pin on without the risk of breaking it. is there a way to strengthen the black walnut just in case? also, today i glued and clamped the middle of the neck laminate a (a piece of maple just under a cm wide, with 2 thin strips of purpleheart). i used some scrap wood in between the clamps and wood, and used lots of glue. hoping the scarp didn't bond to the laminate, because some exccess glue got on it. will rember to put wax paper in between the scraps and drying laminate to avoid this in the future. pics soon

what was going to be the center got muffed up in the gluing process. i have the neck blank gluing right now. due to the planer eating up my purple heart, i had to go with maple, with a thin purple heart center strip. got all the woods, just need to work em. meeting with a local hobbiest bass luthier for help today. also taking whole project home to make a few plans. pics 2night.

I'm fascinated that this is a school project. I just saw pictures of the body, and that is a bad ass shape! I can't wait to see the headstock. Do you have a name for this axe?

All I did in woodshop was make a wall clock that was in the general shape of a guitar, but not really.......

Good luck!

well i met with a local hobbiest luthier and got some help. he sloted the finger board and sold me a truss rod. also got a few additional tips. he said that a scarf joint angled headstock would help strengthen the neck along with some carbon reinforcement rods. he also said that making it a string through would help add to the sound i want. i am using a badass II so i have the option, so i might as well use it. the slots are parralel with eachother, but not with the edges of the board. not a major problem
