Short Scale Basses.

Forgot to include pictures in my post in this thread: Short Scale Basses.

Here's the Warmoth 28 5/8" bass with a Seymour Duncan Rickenbacker neck pickup and a Seymour Duncan guitar Hot Rails pickup in the bridge position:

And here's my current main, an Ibanez Mikro with a pair of P/J EMG Geezer Butler pickups installed:

Maybe it's the ukulele thing, but it seems to me a demo on these should be done by a petite person to illustrate the advantage of its reduced scale. In both vids it looks like a toy in the hands of the average-sized players.

Also I am 6' 4" and I couldn't care less if my Mikro looks like a toy in my hands, it's the perfect instrument for me, and sure doesn't sound like a toy either.

Is it just me or does that E string on the Mikro need a little straightening out between the nut and the post?

It's not my bass I know.....but I almost feel like I want to walk through the screen and fix it for you....:D

Hey guys, I recently got my first short-scale bass, a nice MIJ Mustang, and I've been having problems dealing with the inherent inharmonicity of short-scale basses. On the E and A strings (though I'm usually a half-step down), whenever I play on or above the 7th fret, the fundamental gets really murky/chorus-y and it's pretty bothersome.

How do you guys deal with that? Specific string gauges that help? Flatwounds that offer less upper harmonics? Or just plain avoiding to play up the neck?

Ha, ha :p

Doesn't seem to cause any problems, intonation wise, unstable tuning or otherwise though.

Still I really ought to unwrap it again though and give it a serious bend at the bending point to stretch it out anyway.

The reason though is I used regular 34" scale stings cut to size for it (.105-.045 Ernie Ball).

Despite a lot of people warning about using strings not fit for the scale of the bass and cutting them, I never experienced any problems, string coating unwrapping or anything like that.

Might invest in a set of the strings made specifically for the Mikro next time, same gauge and would be cheaper as well.

Just not sure about the quality.

Did you try screwing the pickups downward a lot to reduce mag field interference? The chorus effect is usually due to pup proximity to strings from my experience.

After playing long scale for years, I now have these short scales:

1964 Gibson EB-0 30"
Gretsch 6128 Thunderjet 30"
Gretsch 5123 hollowbody 32"
Gretsch solid body 30"
Dean Psycho Cabbie, yellow/checkerboard 30"
1970's Univox Coily/335-copy hollowbody,30"
Squier Bronco with Gretsch 2202 pickup

You can say that I like short scales VERY much!
