Short Scale - Gibson SG - Really??

I love my sg, but have to acknowledge they aren't for everyone!
Fender did the Pawnshop mustang for a little bit there with their mudbucker, pretty cool can still be had on eBay. Definitely a thin neck felt like a twig to me

Thanks for the tips and stories folks. After hearing some others stories it seems that Gibson don't have as tight quality control on their basses as their guitars. There is so much out there with my problem being getting my hands on them to play. I'm just gonna have to be patient, play everything I can get my hands on and buy the next one that sings to me.

I know Gibson basses are not for everyone, they for sure don't get much love around here! I have owned many high end basses over a span of 30 plus years of playing including boutique! I believe the Gibson sg is the highest quality mass produced shortscale you will find on the market today.

I feel Gretsch is a little better, but both are fine instruments.

And that's what i was hoping to play. Just this particular one wasn't built well. That's the only point I was trying to make. Didnt mean to sound like i was bashing all Gibsons. Theyve got a good reputation for a reason.

Gibson is really quirky when it comes to bass guitars. I seem to gravitate back to them every time I go off in another direction. They sit differently from Fender and Fender style bass guitars, with the exception of the new EB model. It sits like a Fender unless you relocate the strap button to the back of the neck (which I did on mine). They are generally inexpensive if you get them used, which means fixing the quirks isn't such a big deal. I have played a bunch of them in shops when I wander through, and the worst frets, by far, are on the EB I picked up. It was dirt cheap for what it is, so I can't complain too much. An EB-0 or SG bass for $1K with bad frets would be another issue.
