Short Scale Roundwounds

Looking for reviews/recommendations for rounds with a strong attack and lots of punch, with a tight round bottom and bright (not harsh) top end.

I like smooth feeling strings and would like to avoid excessive noise (screeching) when changing position.

I am looking for clarity and cutting through the mix. I do not like a dull, thumpy sounding string and I rarely use the tone knob on passive basses. I am not interested in flats or halfwounds/groundwounds.

I typically prefer nickel strings, but I'm open to stainless as well if they meet the qualifications noted above. I play fingerstyle exclusively and like a blues rock type tone.

I use Hi Beams on my JMJ Mustang. They give me a great rock tone. The band really likes it.

Yep, HI Beams full the bill for me. They seem to work for various genres and give a nice clear full sound. I've felt no real need to look elsewhere.

If they're too dark for me, they probably are for OP. Sunbeams are great, but "strong attack and lots of punch" is definitely not them.

Trusty 'ol short scale D'addario XL nickels fit the bill IMHO. Have had them on a Bronco, a Jerry Jones and a Mustang and they do "rock" perfectly well.

Never tried them on a shorty but the nickel LR's are the only rounds I use on my other basses. I like how they break in quick and have nice strong mids. Now I gotta get some SS ones and try 'em!

Stringjoy in Nashville is a small boutique string shop that allows you to build a custom set. They are amazing. I have a five string set for my Warwick Streamer Stage 1 strung low E to high C. Amazing strings!

I changed to flats but everytime I think of DR SS, I want them again! Now I've seen your post saying the nickels break in quick and have nice strong mids...I gotta get some DR Nickels to try!! LOL.

Generally D'Addario XL's. I like them overall but I would like to find some strings that have a tighter rounder bottom, especially for short scale.

Ernie Ball Cobalt Roundwounds. If you can’t find them in the scale you want you can just cut the 34” scale to size no problem. I cut 34s for my 32 and worked just fine.

I've only tried one set thus far, but the Stringjoy nickel set on my short-scale Jaguar fits the bill. Shorties can be kinda muddy but with these strings that bass spanks!

I find them smoother than other steels but they will feel a bit more abrasive than nickel strings.
