Trusty 'ol short scale D'addario XL nickels fit the bill IMHO. Have had them on a Bronco, a Jerry Jones and a Mustang and they do "rock" perfectly well.

Me too. D’Addario XL regular light 45-65-80-100 have been my staple fir about 15 years in both short and long scale. Plenty of punch and clarity, and they’re about $23 per set.

I am going back to D'addario EXL170s. Plenty of percussive sound and feel just great.
Currently using Super slinky 40-100 and they are too floppy and lack that percussive bite.
