Short scale strings

I can tell you from experience that Dunlop flats in short scale work on a string thru Mustang.

If they are shorties and not middies this is noteworthy, since Dunlop short-scale flatwounds are usually reported as having a 32" winding length (which would be too little for a string-through-body Mustang).
Either the reports are incorrect, or they've been making them longer (or, um, less short) lately.

As I posted before, I bought some long scale GHS Pressurewounds to put on my Mustang. Before I did, I tried the short scale Pressurewounds I had on my Maruszscyk on the Mustang. If they fit, I was gonna return the longscalers for a set of short scale. Well, they turned out to be about 1/8 - 1/4 short of taking the full wind to the nut on each string. The long scale went on fine with no sign of any wind separation at the tuner. We'll see how long they last.

Dunlop flats come in medium scale as well:

Just price and availability is horrendous so I might skip them an go with TI JF324

Per D'Addario, it's where the taper of the string starts. My Shorty the E1 peg is 32 inches from the ball end, the A1,D2 & G2 are further, so the short scale strings should wind around just fine. They had a sale on Short Scale string sets and they were $ 15.99 vs $ 19.49/19.99, saving about $ 4 per set is incentive to match for EXL170S 45-100 vs Medium/Long/Super Long sets.

I can say this: If you have the traditional body through string bridge it will take a medium
scale set and if it is a regular loading bridge it will take most regular short scale sets. This is of course a general rule and there still may be a variation from set to set.
