Shotgun Question

I think part of my problem with all of this is that it creeps me out to be talking lethal force with folks who don't use their real names!
Hey, I do use my real name! :spit: .................... ;) :p j/k

I get what you are saying Tom. I can understand the words of caution. This is a very serious subject and the responsibility associated with it shouldn't be taken lightly. However, that's why it has been mentioned to seek the advice of professionals.

:)

Hello, Kelly! I spent a lot of time up the road from you, at Marana, once upon a time.

The good advice is fine. It's the bad advice that can have tragic consequences. If the original poster were to choose the bad advice rather that the good advice, who gets to pay the tab? I don't think the presence of some good advice compensates for the bad advice if the bad advice can get someone hurt. I guess I have zero tolerance for bad advice when the stakes are high. We're not choosing a new pickguard here!

Spending a little time writhing around in a frying pan is the best way to get this into perspective, and I fervently hope that none of you ever have to do it. No one really believes that the aftermath is the worst part until they've gotten to play that tune a few times!

On a positive note, if a fellow were to follow the suggestions about locks and lighting, prickly bushes and dogs, he would probably be fairly secure from most home invaders. Those comments about making yourself a hard target are worth the bandwidth this took up. Unfortunately, emotionally disturbed persons, glue heads, and meth monkeys can't tell the hard target from the easy mark, so you still have to plan for them!

Check in Calguns.net, thehighroad.org or thefiringline.com to see if there are any local firearm instructors.

If you wanna go shooting and are willing to drive down to Temecula, lemme know and we'll throw some lead downrange in Fallbrook.

I have a 20ga pump and a few other pieces you can try.

Thanks for the offer. I might just take you up on that. You coming to the LA GTG?

One of the things that spurred my interest in the subject was the "It Takes a Thief" show.

I'm 45 years old and have not yet found the need to punch someone, let alone shoot them. If you honestly think you need weapons, move. Why on earth would you choose to live in a place where your life is under threat? If it's not, you don't need a gun. How will your fiance feel if she actually takes someone's face off with your shotgun? Think about it. Madness imo.

You just answered your own question....why on EARTH. I guess I'll move to the moon so I won't feel threatened. In the American Rifleman magazine, every month there are accounts of how ordinary people have defended themselves with guns from people they never expected to be threatened by. The world and life is very unpredictable.

It's not about expecting to be threatened, it's about being prepared for the worst. It's also a personal decision. If you feel you don't need a gun, my hat's off to you. I've been robbed once before and the feeling that someone has violated your personal space and the thought of what may have happened if I or my kids were in the house at the time makes me sick. I didn't expect to be threatened; it just happened. That's why I choose to arm myself. IMHO of course.

ooh i have an idea, how about trip-wire mines? i think you'ld be pretty well protected then.

then again they'd be costly..hmmmm piano-wire at neck height?

ooh i know, form your neighbours into a tightly knit miltary unit trained to kill anyone who seems to be an intruder upon the street.

I'm more then willing to give out my real name, and many here already know it. I have met many TB'ers from NW OH and MI personally. As far as quality of information, I've spent a little time at the High Road and I would say the percentage of good advice to bad advice is about the same as TB on this subject. It IS the internet after-all, I don't see a whole lot of real names (with a list of credentials) on any forums. I would assume the OP, who appears reasonably intelligent would realize that he will have to sort through some questionable advice. If your going to ask these kind of questions on ANY internet forum you will get this kind of advice, but I think thats pretty much true with ANY kind of information now a days, thats why I go to multiple sources for information on the serious stuff.

and yet i don't feel the need to sleep with a loaded shotgun at arms reach despite living in an area which break ins occur. in fact the flat i live in was actually broken into once. amazing that

illegal guns are gonna exist but i don't think more guns are the anwser.

ooh look you brought politics into it. tut tut.

Look, the only thing that was asked is what type of shotgun to use. There was not mention of whether it was a good idea to own guns. I applaud you for sucking me into your debate and I'll tut tut myself for sinking down a few levels. :rollno:

I'll also apologize to all my TB bretheren for being stupid enough to bite hook, line and sinker.

Spoiled,

Something else that I'll express to you as important is that you at least get basic training for everyone who MAY come into contact with the weapon, not just who you expect to. On one of the gun boards I frequent, a regular poster had his wife (who isn't into guns) pick up a handgun and accidentally pointed it towards him. He got chewed out and it was pointed out that it was HIS fault for not showing her the proper handling of firearms when they are in close proximity as the non-gun nut.

My wife knows which ones she's familiar with and which ones not to touch. My 13 year old son could load, unload, check safety, and field strip all my firearms when he was 8 years old. He loves shooting and has his own firearms, but I also wanted to expose him to as many different types as possible so that he KNOWS that just dropping the magazine on a semiauto doesn't mean it's unloaded, always check the chamber... and if he ever finds himself in the position that he's NOT supposed to be in, alone with a firearm 'found' at a friends house or whatever, even if he screws up and handles it, he'll know how to make sure it's unloaded and how to safely handle it. I don't just child-proof my firearms, I firearm-proof my children. Anyone who has other people around their firearms should do the same.

My three year old can't quite work the actions yet, though. :D

ETA: ALL YOUR PAGE 8 ARE BELONG TO ME!!!11!!!

TheDarkReaver and el_Kabong, why are you guys trying to stir stuff up? Just because you don't agree, or don't understand, he asked for help and you are crapping in his thread.

Why don't you guys just step away from the keyboard, OK?

What kind of a post is this from a moderator? I'm not crapping in anyone's thread. The bottom line is this thread is about personal safety. What's wrong with offering the point of view that guns are a poor option and that there are alternatives? Perhaps my crime is having a different opinion to yours, an opinion that you do not understand or agree with? Why don't you take a look at yourself and your own motivations Kelly Lee before you make assumptions about mine?

You just answered your own question....why on EARTH. I guess I'll move to the moon so I won't feel threatened.

I'm sorry that you have been robbed. But do you seriously believe that there is no place on earth that you can be safe without a gun? It's absolutely untrue but if you genuinely feel that way then that's an issue you might want to address. I'm not being a smart arse.

Don't worry Kelly Lee, just replying to an earlier post. I won't post anymore of my 'crap'. Feel free to put the boot in. :)

We have Mossberg 500's...a 20 gauge(light kick) for wife & daughter, a 12 gauge for me & son. They are both inexpensive, as shotguns go, and reliable being based on military designs.

NORMALLY, they are loaded with one round of birdshot(1st round) and followed by the HEAVIEST loads next...in case more persuasion is required. Indoors, you do NOT want stuff going thru walls and you HAVE TO be aware of what is BEHIND your target.

What kind of a post is this from a moderator?
One trying to keep things on topic for the OP. Plus, I happen to be a member the same as you.

Yes, you are. This thread may be about safety in a roundabout way but the specific questions that were asked were and I quote...

What's the typical "spread" of a shotgun? Is it possible to get one with a small spread, or to adjust the spread? This will be for home security, 100%. I plan to train with this, so I won't be shooting blind.

Which shotgun will have the lightest kick? My fiance will be training with this as well, and she is a lightweight. (110 lbs?)

Which will be most economically friendly? Obviously quality is important, and I wouldn't dare save a couple of bucks just to get something that is shabby, or won't perform when necessairly. However, I'm not looking to spend tons of cash on some fun little widget or scope that I don't need.

Do I even need a shotgun? Is there a better firearm that would be more appropriate for my situation? I don't want to conceal the weapon, as I want it to be very obvious that I have a firearm. I also don't plan on hunting or shooting for recreational purposes at this moment.
He is specifically asking about a shotgun or possibly another type of firearm. Not about not getting a firearm.

What's wrong with offering the point of view that guns are a poor option and that there are alternatives?
Nothing if the OP asked for it.
Perhaps my crime is having a different opinion to yours, an opinion that you do not understand or agree with?
Nope. You are entitled to yours just as I am to mine. That's what makes America great.
Why don't you take a look at yourself and your own motivations Kelly Lee before you make assumptions about mine?
I looked at the evidence at hand. You came in offering comment/opinion that the OP did not ask for. Why did you feel the need to interject your thought where you can obviously see it doesn't fit with the OP's request.

I think you should take your own suggestion and go look in the mirror at yourself. I merely pointed out what you were doing as it was obvious to the OP and other members participating in this thread. It was not a personal attack, just an observation. You, however, have taken it as such and attack me with comments like "What kind of a post is this from a moderator?".

Anyways, if you want to discuss it further, let's take it to PM's. We are derailing the OP's thread and that is not what he wanted.

Sorry Spoiled Grape. :(
