Should I buy A Bongo?

I have never been in a shop that any one had a clue as to what did what. Sure I can figure it out by ear eventually but it is great to know what will do what before tweaking it.

As was said try one and if you like it, buy it.

assuming its a dual pup with the 4 band eq,

starting from the knob closest to the neck:

volume, pup blend(stacked with piezo blend if there is a piezo), low mid/high mid (stacked), bass/treble(stacked).

I've owned 4 Bongos and I didn't have any neckdive with any of them. Of course, I use 4" wide straps with suede lining, too...

I don't know what my Bongo total is now....ten, maybe.

None of them were neck divers.

The Bongo is the official bass of the 2007 Spring Olympics in Latvia, by the way, so I don't think you can go wrong.

That's good to hear. The Bongo has so frequently been described as "(insert bass name) on steroids," I was certain that it was banned from international competition...

Yup. The consensus among many of the Bongo afficianados is that it is the best sounding model in the line, as well. The phrase "sweet spot" is used a lot to describe the pickup location, which is a little different than on a single H 'ray, IIRC.

Hmm... nice to know!
I know this is OT (PM me if ya like) but is the Bongo 4 neck more like a S'Ray or Sterling?

I need to check one of the four (:eek: ) GC's here in the Detroit area to see if any Bongo 4's are in stock.

Can't buy one right now, but I'm a sucker for that MM tone!!!
And to me the Bongo 5's that I played do it real well, and a ton more too!

Mike, you may have a problem locating a single H Bongo. I haven't seen them "on the wall" at a GC. Most of the Bongos are the HH or HS models. However, Bongos can be had for not much $$$. I recently sold my mint condition 5HH to soniq for $850 including OHSC. It was a heck of a bass, but I got GAS (big surprise) for a 'ray and ordered one of the limited-edition Martini 5HHs. I guess I liked the 'ray tone better in the end -- the Bongo has that MASSIVE clean tone thing going, and I like a little more growl and grit.

I do miss my Bongo, though. IMO, there's not a better 34" scale 5-string production bass available for the money than the EBMM ones, which speaks to the quality of the neck and neck joint. If you could find a single H Bongo used, you could get it cheap, and it would be a great deal.

Some day I'm going to jump all over a used 5-string single H stealth Bongo.
