Should I buy while the iron is hot?

Apparently closed the factory in South Korea (originated there....I think it was Jack Westwood and one of the Piano/classical instrument companies like Young Chang in partnership..) without warning and moved to Indonesia. Put a lot of people out of work...there was a demonstration at NAMM that year iirc and a couple months ago, when I was in Seoul, there were still demonstrations protesting it...though their signage was quite worn from the time passed.
I hope you don't drive a Ford or a GM. They put a lot of folks out of work here in the states by moving production, too.

I was at the local music shop the other day, and I saw an interesting looking bass on the wall. Asked to see it, fell in love with it within 5 minutes. Given the features and the amazing tone, I couldn't believe its price of only $500 U.S. It's the Cort C4 Plus ZBMH (not OTAB)

Here's the thing, I want to buy it, I have the funds, and I've been searching for a good j-bass for a while, but my mother does not want me to buy it because she thinks it is a rash/reckless purchase. My current bass came as part of a learning kit with combo amp, cord, the whole deal, but it just doesn't cut it after 7 years experience. Also it's a p-bass, which some people do like, I just don't - not as well as j-basses at least. To some degree, I see her point of view, but at the same time, I know that I'll never find another bass just like it. Anyone want to give opinions?View attachment 2978448

Sire has a new J-Bass out the V3. The 5 string is only $399 and I guess the 4 str is even cheaper. :) The 4 str is $329 and has the same pre as the more expensive models.
You can also get the Sire V7 or V7 Vintage starting at 5 bills (which is supposed to have better PUs than the V3). Do some research on them... I just ordered a P7 and am peeing myself a little while waiting to get it...

If you're trying to get talked out of buying a bass, you've come to the wrong place :)

I’ll bite — what blood is on Cort’s hands?

I actually just watched Blood Diamond this past weekend (walked in while it was playing on the TV and got sucked in — wow, pretty damn harsh stuff), so I’m not necessarily in a totally unreceptive frame of mind, but also, like you say, pretty much everything has its negative impacts. What are we talking about here? Also, how are they different from other large musical instrument manufacturers?

If I recall correctly, before that there was a very, VERY long labor dispute with their workers, where the guitars were being made in sweatshop conditions and there was a lot of hush money paid to local officials to keep quiet about the labor law violations, and just generally a bunch of super shady stuff. At the end of the day, Cort didn't want to pay the workers even minimum wage, and instead of paying them more and giving them a decent living, they closed up the shop and moved to Indonesia, where rules are significantly more lax.

I’d buy a used Fender Jazz Bass MIM or even better Mij instead.

I ended up selling both of mine. After a fairly short period of time the necks went wonky (they were not that way when I bought them and I decided to just move on instead of keep dumping money into them.

If it was just one I'd never have thought about it but 2 going funky?

I had absolutely no problems with my 2014 mim Fender Jazz, I guess that's how it goes with about anything man-made-there's always some(bad ones) that gets through.

Well, I "Liked" it. Not that i agreed with everything he said. In particular, the original poster (Mister Frisbee) said he doesn’t like the feel of Fenders, so no need for him to get a Fender then or to encourage him to get one — Mister Frisbee should of course get something he wants and will enjoy.

However, I thought Blaze Barlow’s comment of "...the joke used to be that "peavey is ibanez spelled backwards"..and we would all laugh..and look at each other..to make sure everyone else was also laughing..those were the days" was funny as heck and deserved a big ‘ol "Like" :roflmao:

(Nothing against Peavey, I just thought that was a good joke, plus a good reaction. I don’t even understand exactly what it means, but I know it cracked me up...)

I confess that in a face to face conversation I'd probably join in with similar stupid stories and laugh too... but when I read it it reminded me of too many times when I saw kids with cheaper instruments, instruments they worked hard to buy or their parents bought them, and who succumbed to peer pressure (peers who knew nothing) and started either treating their instruments like crap, trying to be cool, or even shy to play with others... It's sad, and remembering those cases I just wanted to give it a big dose of "oh no, you di'nt" :D

That's all, really.

its just the way I do things..its quick and easy for me....hope it doesnt destroy your world....just bypass my comments....they all look this way....this time I added a few extra dots just for you..
I don't see how multiple periods are quicker than one, but what do I know? And on a different note: Oh, the irony...

Just the usual labor practices. For something as frivolous as a musical instrument, it is enough.

A) I was just answering his question posed to another poster...I have no dog in the fight nor enough internal knowledge of the situation to cast stones

B) I ride a Zongshen motorcycle, I live in Chongqing, China.....here Ford works with a company called Changgan and have created 1000s of excellent jobs for Chinese and US workers here.

C) I would not buy a Chevy or Ford or Chrysler, were I to buy a car, for many other reasons.

Wow...quite a number of questions need to be asked on this post.
First off, is the money yours or did your parents give some or all of it? Maybe your mom is concerned about how you're spending the money and sees a better use for it? You mentioned that you have no intention to get into professional music, so perhaps some of her concerns lie in that reasoning.

Cort is a decent brand (I have one, a different model), however it's important to mention that once you buy any new bass (for that price, I'm assuming it's a new bass), it will depreciate in value if you later decide to upgrade or sell it together, so you will lose money.
There is an option that I think will satisfy both you and your mom, and that is to buy used. Buy a used bass, you can very likely re-sell it for the price you paid (assuming you got it at fair market value), you don't lose money..it'll be worth the same as when you bought it as it's already used. Being that you live in the US, you can also look at instruments on the Guitar Center used site, they currently don't have a similar Cort C4, BUT looking at it, and reading about the features, pickups etc....you can get an even better used bass that's similar but with an even better neck than that one, an Ibanez SR500. Similar Bartolini pickups, also with a 3 band EQ - instead of a maple neck, it's wenge/bubinga which is much faster imo. If you still want a maple neck, you can look at even cheaper Ibanez Soundgear models like the SR300 or SR400 . Used SR500 basses are about half that price, Shipping to your front door only adds $20 to the cost and you still get a 45 day return policy. I would recommend at the very least trying out an Ibanez SR bass to see how it compares to that Cort and go from there.
Here's the SR500

I won't get involved in the 'what momma says' bit, but getting back to the instrument in question:

OP has spent 7 years with his old bass, definitely time for a change :)

Cort are quite a well-known brand (mainly outside the US) and generally have a good reputation for quality, in a 'budget' fashion.
I played an active C4 in store fairly recently- not sure of the exact model, but looked a lot like the one pictured. I wasn't interested in buying one (I was actually getting a bit of a drool on over a Sterling SUB Ray4 - now that's a very nice 'budget' bass!), but the guy in the store said "try this Cort, it's really nice for the money" - and it was! Not my style of bass or sound, but for build quality & overall feel I couldn't fault it at that price point. Could have maybe used a bit more set-up, but that's only to be expected.

OP - If that's the one that 'does it' for you, then go for it. I think that the promethean combo will do the Cort justice, and they will keep you happy for a few years.
