I'm thinking about making a small pedalboard. For convenience, a wireless unit would make setting up mildly more seamless, but can they be a hassle? My band is usually not playing big venues.

i don't generally play big venues, but I love having a wireless again. Less cables to possibly trip over or step on. I have one on both sides of my pedal board so I have no cables running to my amp. They can be a hassle if you forget to charge it up, but that's about it. I have the Shure GLXD and the battery lasts for a long time.
I played both small and fairly big venues with a wireless for about a year. It sits in a box in my basement now. Took me as long to set it up as the whole rest of my rig. I don't need to be running around any venues when I play and a 20' cord is so much quicker and easier. Replacing a 9v battery every gig got to be a pain too.
I love my wireless. Nothing to do with meandering in the crowd - just one less chord to have to manage. But I always have a cable available - I've had situations where a local source interfered with the transmission and it didn't work so well.
I do not use my wireless on smaller gigs, usually limited space to move around so cable works fine for that.
Wireless is awesome. Not sure why there’s any negative talk about it.

I've been using mine at every gig for a while now, even the really small stages. Keeps me from wrapping the cable around my leg. The 16hr run time of the GLX-D battery makes things really easy. It's a good setup as far as cheaper wireless goes.
