    All-instrumental groups

Typically, I've led jazz groups that didn't feature singers, mainly as background music. I'd like to branch out into pop, but still stay away from having a singer, at least not on every gig. Has anyone had any experience with this type of booking that you can share some info about? I'm thinking...

Indoor Busking: The New Club Gig Model?

There's a newer venue in my area - in the tourist trap zone - that touts live music and has it all the time. But they don't pay the musicians; tip jar only. (They comp food & drinks FWIW.) After having played 1000 gigs on that block for money - plus tips & comps - this doesn't sit well with me...

Thoughts on this venue's conditions for a gig?

A community near me has concerts at a gazebo in a local park. I inquired to the organizer about playing there and his response is below (lightly edited to remove irrelevant info and protect the innocent). I'm curious about reactions to this. ...you provide sound system, we provide lights, you...

How loud is to loud for small venues?

Last show at a small bar their were bands with stacks that made standing a little more than kicking distance from the stage unbearable. I felt a very slight hearing lose or dizziness when we left. Is this normal for audiences?

Should I get a wireless for small venues (Just cuz)

I'm thinking about making a small pedalboard. For convenience, a wireless unit would make setting up mildly more seamless, but can they be a hassle? My band is usually not playing big venues.

    Venues Closing

Anyone dealing with a bunch of bars/venues in their area closing down? Seems like it’s happening to a lot of us. Just got word today that a scheduled gig was canceled due to a closing. 2nd time it’s happened this year, and now my calendar is, unfortunately, a lot more open.

A good IEM system for clubs and medium sized venues

As the title says, I’m looking for a current batch of IEM wireless systems that will work from small dive bars to medium sized venues (2k peeps) which is the extremes of the places I play these days. I have a nice set of 6 driver custom molded 1964 ears that I used when touring, I’m looking at...

    Music venues and stores NYC

Hello, I'm spending Christmas in NYC (Dec 23rd to 29th) and wondered if my fellow TBers from NYC could help me out with some venues to see live music and music stores. I'm going to see The Bad Plus at the Village Vanguard on December 26th and Mike Stern at The 55 Bar December 27th. Any others...

Do's and Dont's for sending emails to venues to get gigs?

I have recently put a band together and have become the band leader by default. I have limited experience in obtaining gigs. I would like to put something out to a lot of the local venues to see if I can get something lined up. Most of them do booking online now, and I was just interested in...

venues going rock, the death jam bands and country?

kind of an interesting thing I've noticed in eastern NC. I'm seeing more and more venues starting to get away from jam bands, cover bands, and country bands. Which used to be pretty popular in the area. I don't know if it's an issue of over saturation of those types of bands or lack of people...

Why bands get paid so badly and venues are disappearing.

I've written this or similar in numerous threads but thought it deserved its own thread. Most of it relates to your weekend warrior bands and unknown originals bands but also, here in Australia at least, to the well known bands with a following and good record sales. I've been managing pubs...

    Wedding changed venues

My band agreed to play our first wedding. It's for a couple who have been at s few of our gigs. They even bought their family to our last gig to show them the band. They're super excited. Got news last night that they have changed venues. They were getting married at a local venue, but now are...

Looking for music venues in Italy

Can anybody on here recommend any good music venues (jazz in particular) in Rome, Naples, or Venice? I'm traveling around Italy for a two weeks and I would like to check out the Italian music venues. It seems like they have a good jazz scene there. I plan on checking out Gregory's Jazz Club and...

    Amp+head for indoor venues

Hi all, I'm looking for small and light head (at least 500 w) + small cabinet. And here's the thing... I don't know which head and cab choose. I always played on Ampegs, but this gear is kind of meaty, dull, oldschool, etc. (and very heavy too). It's nice for me because I like that sound but I...

Using cheap basses at questionable venues

Who here has cheap basses that they use on gigs where u are afraid of bringing their more expensive gear due to theft or damage? Like would you bring say a Ritter or a Ric etc... on a seedy bar gig or do u have a cheap ibanez or squier that gets tge call of duty? As always pics are welcomed

Bludgeoned by Boominess in some venues

Our quartet performed at a venue in which we've wanted to play regularly. Acoustically it's not too good, particularly for those on stage. Very long front to back, narrow from side to side. Much of the stage wall material is corrugated steel. We are at our loudest there which still isn't too...

    Are Local Venues Killing Music?

On Talk Bass we flap our gums a lot about the damage digital streaming has done to the revenues of original artists. But what about the damage being done at the roots of the music biz; the local venue? As a guy trying to play smaller clubs and bars, it seems to me like these guys are doing just...

one of our venues not having bands anymore

We played friday night at Cowboy Food and Drink in Bainbridge Ohio. We generally play at only three venues on a regular rotation, and last night the owner told us he's not planning on having any bands next year. Apparently the insurance and licensing costs were too much for him. Even as of...

Any must visit music stores or venues in San Antonio?

I'm in San Antonio for the week visiting my fiance's cousin. She ended up being sick so we're looking for some alternate things to do.

How does a new band with little to no live performance experience get venues to give them a chance?

I have my first gig coming up, but it is only because my friend in the band knows the bar owner. Other than that we've been trying to get gigs, but as expected, most venues want established and trustworthy acts to book. How does a newbie dive into the world of gigging, if no one is willing to...

Hitting venues for gigs -cold walk in

It is that time. We got our 26 songs and even a banner. I am very good at talking to people and already talked to a couple of guys over beers about playing their venues and they were keen. Of course that may have been beer talk :) Now i want to follow up with them and looking for your...

Tip #4 Never Play Venues with Balloons

Caution: Balloons are like a dog whistle to unstable audience members. Note: When all else fails you can use your guitar as a weapon. If it's good enough for Keith, it's good enough for me.

What's with no venues having PA/FOH gear?

From what I've gathered from everyone going on about owning/purchasing/maintaining a PA to take to gigs, and mostly from the US crowd... Do you guys really have to take your own PA's to gigs, own all your own lighting, venues are literally a stage and nothing else? Is that actually true, is it...

    Venues with weird acoustics?

Anyone else discovered venues with really odd acoustics? We're all used to the reverberant ones, the totally dead ones and that kind of thing, but we recently found a really strange one. A modern theatre, holding about 800 or so, and the support for us was a Stevie Wonder tribute. Him, a synth...

    Venue Ideas

I'm in a cover band and we've been doing the typical bar gig thing for about a year now. No complaints, it's all going well. But looking for ideas on other types of venues we might possibly approach. I remember reading on here about camp ground gigs and I thought that was a cool idea but we...

Trouble deciding a cab suited for my needs/sound

So, I'm looking for buying a new cab Currently I'm rigging an Orange Terror Bass 500 (500W hybrid) into a Trace Elliot 1048H (800W 410+tw+reflex) My basic sound is focused just between lowmids and mids, not too many lowmids, bit more bass, everything above mids rolled off. Then a truckload of...
