Should the OT mods be more aggressive?

hmmmm... .

was that intentional irony?

i tend to think the moderators are a bit heavy handed. i also don't understand people complaining about threads that annoy them. just don't read it, as others have said. when people start attacking one another, then i think it's good to cut down a thread. if a few stupid coments are made, those comments can be deleted. i've seen sooooo many threads get fried that were just starting to become interesting. i don't think a little heat is a bad thing. i kinda enjoy when things start getting slightly out of hand, angry, and or silly. what's everyone so afraid of. so long as we don't hurt one another or permantly mar the kiddies.

The truth is, when you mod a forum you have a certain amount of leeway to set the general tone of it. I'm glad to be able to help set the tone for the DB forums, but even more pleased that I don't have to wrestle with the TaBcRaWlErIsH nature of so many of the OT posts. Would I like to see stricter moderation in OT? Sure, but only by way of ******** threads getting closed quicker. But, I keep getting quoted as saying that OT should be killed, which is odd since I've never really said that, or even wished it. Go figure.

What I DO wish for is the enhanced search feature which will allow me to ignore it entirely. When that happens, I won't much care how ******** OT has become. :)

i am offering a sincere unbiased opportunity based on the fact that a lot of folks have been complaining to me of the OT content lately and expecting me to do something about it.

I too have been hearing complaining coming from the younger more "lively" members along with comments and complaining from the veterans.

The difference being the "young" bunch complain about each other more than the veterans complain about the newer crowd. This I find ironic in the fact that the younger newer TBr's create the most work. I have to play referee like a parent does. Similiar to "He started.......but she called me as a$$......he always gets away it...blah.....blah". Thats the kind of crap that a OT mod has to put up with and try to tolerate.

i imagine jazzbo has been dealing with it too, although i haven't talked to him about it in a while, and who knows what's going on in odie's head   :D (j/k odie).

Whats going thru my mind?? Burnout, lack of enjoyment mixed with the fact that I have a very sick Wife and a dying Father.

My Wife has been in the hospital six times in the last 6 months, and to the E.R. at least the same amount. That coupled with the fact that it has been hard on our daughter, and has drained what little money we have. My father had brain surgery last summer, and has been dealing with heart failure. He wont be around next summer.

So to say the least life hasnt been the most fun. Music, keeping aquariums, holding my daughter, and of course TB have been the things that keep me happy. But as of late TB just really pisses me off and is hard to stomach(lack of a better term). I hate to see something I really enjoyed and be involved in make me irate to no end.

Enough about the negative.

My future here TB will involve me turning a new page. Im going to post more regular and Mod like I have never done before.

Enough about me.

What do I think should be done??? I think some things should be more strict and regulated. I think the rules shouldnt be so open-ended.

On the flipside I think it would be good to be more tolerant of heated discussions. Let the debates rage on. But looking back at previous attempts it didnt always remain civil. Reports to mods occuring too much.

What should be done??? I think everyone should grow up alittle and maybe Moderate yourselves.

I repeat Moderate Yourselves more.

Take pride in the fact that you dont need JT,Jazzbo or myself to babysit you.

Another point I want to make is that I think we should maybe add a rule that may abate some of the freebies and pointless threads. Reduce the clutter in TB.

I will shut up now.

at this point i am onered(CS) to post after you sir

i hope things in your life get better and i hope that your father has no pain in his last days. your wife will feel better and things with your daugter will only change in time.

now on to TB... all i can say is your right we should modarate ourself more (im not trying to hand out advise here) but the thing i like to do before i post and afew times before i start any thread is " will this better TB, is this actceptable in TB (ok so i had that one thread, sorry again jt) and last but not least did i spell as best i could(just a joke at my own expence)

:bassist: rock on TB's

i'm only trying to get a feel for the general membership's feelings about the topic of moderatorial approach in ot.

I don't believe in this case that the poll is going to tell you anything - it has too few options and you are not going to get a representative sample of the TB population - most sensible people are now avoiding OT whenever they can.

Fair enough - you already devote a lot of time to TB and to do this properly would require more than anyone should be expected to give - but don't pretend that this is in any way a representative study.

I could offer some suggestions for better ways to do this - like 100 (a least) messages to a random sample of active TB users?

But this thread has thrown up some interesting facts (from Odie in particular) - like the younger members are complaining just as much about useless posts as anyobody else.

I hardly ever use the "report this" function - unless it is an obscene post or obvious spam, so it is interesting to hear that there is a lot of this going on between the younger members - I can see this is going to be a strain on moderators and I genuinely feel sorry for you and will try not to complain so much in future.

I must say that I don't like to complain, but as Merlin said - somebody has to stand up and be counted - but I would like to say that the Moderators are doing a great job here and I would never complain about their actions - I would just like to talk to more musicians, but I think the exprienced members of the forum can do this by starting more threads encouraging this - no problem. :)

 with a few exceptions ;)

I'm happy for the mods to continue as they are - it's my responsibility to ignore threads that I feel are a waste of time and contribute worthwhile questions and answers to the discussions all across Talkbass. I don't feel I can vote to ask the mods to do more work when all I need to do to waste less time is already in my hands.

And most importantly, what changes? What can we do about this? Is there a solution that will satisfy everyone, without discriminating anyone?

We live in a society so it means we have to deal with all kinds of people. The internet is a society. TalkBass is on the internet.

I second this. Instead of bashing one select group of members, intelligent, on-topic posting should be encouraged, for all members. Chat-style posting should be avoided. There's a useful PM feature everybody can use for that.

I think the only true problem here is waste of bandwidth. How many threads have we seen about Fender's Aerodyne bass? Or slap technique?

Great idea! More music-related threads wouldn't hurt!

P.S. Odie, I hope all the family's getting better.

Well I did say "most"!! ;)

I agree entirely with your post - it's not up to moderators and I certainly don't want them to do any more work.

I feel that it is up to all of us, to encourage more posts about what we want and to start threads about this - it is for all of us to stand up and be counted and say what we like/dislike about TB.

Mods should follow the rules. If you think the rules need to be changed, bring it up with Paul. AFAIK, only Paul has the right to change the rules, or am I wrong? Moderating outside the rules is the same as changing them arbitrarily. This site is becoming extremely bitchy, btw. Can we make a new rule about the endless complaining? ;)

Ditto (again. I think we were separated at birth). Besides, I got the impression from that other thread that Bruce had already singlehandedly taken care of the problem. ;)

Improving the ignore function should satisfy everyone's needs without increasing the burden on the mods. And the first guys going on mine are the one who won't stop crying about OT. I'd rather read Mike Money's posts (which I often find hysterical, if a little frightening) than the hand-wringing prissitude being written by some of our elder statesmen.

Perhaps Paul could add a panty de-bunching function as well...

*thinks*

hmm, take a look at this thread and see who would be some problem makers: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showt...688&perpage=30&highlight=leaving&pagenumber=2

(note: i have no problem with threads like this, i just want to point out that some of you who seem to be targeting us "off topic kids" are overlooking mods and supporting members who do the EXACT same stuff you complain about us doing)

I think you need the panty de-bunching function. Obviously your making a cut at Brendan. In his defense he rarely creates or posts anything that is being referred to in your desription.

Plus what is even more rude about you pointing this out is the fact that he letting us know he is going off to college and that time and bling-bling(sorry had to put that in their) will be limited. Yes it turned into an IM type conversation, but the thread was valid.

The point of the "OT Kids" are the regular IM, pointless, freebie threads that are created by the same people.....repeatedly.

I agree with what Bruce says.
