well, then, just remember, you will be perceived the way your present yourself. word to the wise - if you act like a juvenile, you will be treated as such. goes for everyone here. if you're ok with that, then fine, but don't complain if there comes a time when nobody will take you seriously.

how is that acting like a juvenile? i said i was leaving it before it turned into an argument, i was stepping away from the coming confrontation, i was "being the bigger person" so to speak. i fail to see how refusing to argue is immature/juvenile

i dont see the problem with this. at least that proves to some who think i only come here to visit the OT forum that they are wrong

how so? if anything it validates what they say - 77% of your posts are not bass related in any way. by comparison, 33% of my posts over the same period have been in off topic, and i'm a _mod_ here, i have to participate.

participate 100% in ot for all i care, but then don't complain that you aren't taken seriously, because you won't be. random postings in the non-ot section of the board that have nothing to do with the topic at hand aren't going to win any folks any favors either (like some of your "kidz" compatriots like to do).

you're not the first "ot kidz" to come around here and get chased off by apathy and active antipathy, and you won't be the last. you have the choice available to you here - you can do your best to help the community be stronger in a _bass related_ manner, and win the respect of your peers, or you can continue the way you are going and find yourself shunned by almost everyone - you won't be censored by me, nor will any of your cronies, as long as the usage agreement is observed and followed. when you do decide you want more out of this board than just a forum for juvenalia, you might find that some folks won't give you the chance. you reap what you sow.

face it - the majority of the folks who participate here are older and don't really care to hear about kiddie things. you have to accept that - there's other forums on the net for that kind of discussion - have at it. by living in OT, you are missing out on a great resource - many of the folks here have been playing bass longer than you've been alive. get over your juvenile "ot kids" crap and come on up to the topicality. you'll grow as a musician for it, and you'll find real respect.

if you make a sincere effort to be a part of the community, you'll be surprised at what you'll find.

oh well...
this is quickly becoming a one vs. many "war"

there's no war. there are quite a few folks trying not ungently to educate the mostly minor (as in under 21) minority of what they would like to see and participate in the discussion forum that they care about.

that is impossible to win so ill just quit trying, as i see the others who are constantly being talked badly about arent even trying to stand up for themselves. :hmm:

perhaps these folks are taking the hint and trying to adjust their posting habits accordingly. some folks require a brick to fall on their heads, and some folks don't :).

i didn't say that "leaving the thread before it turned into an argument" was juvenile, i said, or implied, that being an "ot kid", revelling in that fact, and attempting to justify it and somehow force respect for it, appears to many as juvenile. sorry for the confusion :).

John, I didn't read a majority of this thread, nor do I want to, but I have a suggestion. Sometime when you or one of the other off topic mods are bored, go through and delete all the old (we have pages and pages) absolutely irrelevant off topic threads, that should free up bandwith like it ain't no thang.

bandwidth isn't really an issue, from what i understand, although i know that paul has actually gone through and started pruning some really old OT threads, like from 3 years ago.

i think the point is the general "tone" of the board, and some folks aren't that comfortable with it - you know, everything contributes. i think it's getting a bit too "tinny" (teen-y) ;) for some folks. not saying i completely agree, but like i said earlier, i can definitely see both sides of the issue.

if

as i said before, most of my time at TB is spent in the other forums. i for one browse the DB forums WAY too much because it is what interests me, but as i have little to no experience on DB i feel no need to post there. i do not feel like i am missing out on anything because i do browse the "on topic" forums MUCH more than i browse OT. i probably go to the actual ot forum once or twice a day, and i stay active in the threads i participate in by checking the "my talk bass feature" everytime i come to this site. as you said, posting irrelevant things in the on topic forums will not get anyone respect, so instead of doing that i just browse, but when i have a question or when i feel i have valuble information to share i do, simple as that.

as i've said many times before, just because im active in OT doenst mean im inactive (whether i post or not) in the other forums. :)

Ah I see. Then I stand by my original statement, "Don't like off topic, stay out of off topic." :hmm:

Frankly I love it the way it is, even though I'm sure I'm an "off topic kid". The argument is "why not go to a strictly off topic forum", my response is I like musicians... especially bassists. We can crack certain jokes that only a bassist would get, and just the general vibe... it's fun. But in the meantime, we haven't quite reduced ourselves to tabcrawler. A majority of the "off topic kids" attempt proper spelling/grammer... note I said attempt.

I'm 16 years old. I registered the day before my 14th birthday, and since the minute I came here I have been contributing experiences and asking questions to the general population.

Even more so, FreakyFender is what, 14? And he's a mod, not to mention a great guy who shares his experiences (I especially enjoyed his article in the Newsletter :)).

Tyler Hole (formerly Newbassplayer666), a relatively new member, is 14 or 15. He has been submitting experiences, asking questions, and sharing info for a while now.

This goes to show- it doesn't matter your age. Everyone has something to contribute here, because everyone plays bass.

Or so I thought... lately, I've begun to wonder.

This site is called "talk bass." Paul created this site so that folks like myself, Brenden, John Turner, Jeff Wade (embellisher), bgavin, and most of the people here could contribute information. We all learn from this, and most of us discuss it. Is that to say none of us have BS posts? Abosolutely not. But, IMO, these people have contributed their thoughts and ideas enough to be able to have the occasional BS post. I feel like we are a community here. I feel like I know quite a few of the people here in a small way. When someone waltzes in here, and very rarely shares anything (even if you are using the search function, you can respond to something!), only using Off Topic as their personal message board, I become annoyed.

fair enough - that's a good approach.

this discussion can also be used as a form of "clean slate-time" for all you self-proclaimed ot-kidz - a chance for you guys to address the issues some folks might have and state your intentions thereto.

(btw, i'm not necessarily targetting you on purpose, defeldus, just that you're the only one participating here, like you said. my sincereist hope is for all the participants here to be able to communicate to each other, and respect each other. wouldn't it be grand if nobody used their ignore feature because nobody felt inclined to? that's my goal. if it seems like i'm being hard on you, it's only because i'd like to see nobody ignoring you :) ).

dont worry, i dont feel like you are being harsh or anything on me, im gald you are communicating like you said. i too dislike the idea of having an ignore feature, mostly because i feel that everyone has something to share and something i can learn from. at the same time i dont expect everyone to like me and i expect to be on ignore lists, mostly because i do speak my mind and say what i think, but oh well thats just me. i also hope noone reads my posts in this thread and takes it as me being vehemontly angry or anything, thats not how i meant it at all, im a calm mellow person, so try to keep that in mind when you read them so they dont get taken out of context :)

Ok, I've been staying out of this thread because I feel I don't have a strong opinion on anything that has been stated in it. But I just read Eric's post and I feel I have something to say.

Just to let you know Eric, im 15 (my bday is in december) and lately I have been staying out of OT as much as possible. Now for the reason I have been:

I had been getting bashed in a few threads for trying to act more "mature" and I guess some felt that I shouldn't try and do this and also just for some other stuff (mainly some stupid posts I made). So one day I PMed JT about my feelings (like JT said, he has gotten PMs about this kind of stuff). So he replied a couple hours later and told me to not post in OT so much. I thought about it and agreed with him that I had been posting in OT when it really wasn't needed. So since then I haven't been posting as much in OT. I've been browsing a lot more lately and it has actually been quite nice. Without posting so much in OT my brain doesn't throb so much and my fingers don't hurt as much so I can play more bass.

But I am also going to agree with a lot of people about the types of threads in OT. If you don't like it, then don't read it. Your just making yourself mad because you can't contain yourself from reading it. Yes JT and Jazzbo and Odie HAVE to read them because they are mods, and personally I think they are the only ones who have a right to complain about it, but no one else.

With that said, I will reply to people asking me questions about what I have just said, but I am not going to post anything else except those replies unless I feel I need to. Good Day all ~ Tyler

OK time for me to chime in again. This defense of "if you don't like OT, stay out of it" doesn't hold water. OT is an important part of TB. OT is often where the friendships are formed and the overall feeling that TB is a community is developed. It the perfect place to see that we're not all bass playing robots and are in fact real people.

If I wanted to get bass info from a total stranger, I'd go ask the stoner behing the counter of my local music store. But I'd rather get info from people whom I have gottten to know, perhaps share a joke with them, recieve a good natured jab in return, and everyone walks away happy.

So please don't tell me to stay out of OT.

After perusing AMPS, TB'ers threads and posts there helped me put together a modest rig which I'm quite happy with. So why wouldn't I be interested in what those same people might do to unwind, or share an unrelated(to music) experience? I can choose to skip it if I want. Though some threads can be funny, entertaining, and even of an informative nature:eek:.
