OT is often where the friendships are formed and the overall feeling that TB is a community is developed. It the perfect place to see that we're not all bass playing robots and are in fact real people.

So please don't tell me to stay out of OT.

Yup - that's exactly it - great post!! :)

how so? if anything it validates what they say - 77% of your posts are not bass related in any way. by comparison, 33% of my posts over the same period have been in off topic, and i'm a _mod_ here, i have to participate.

participate 100% in ot for all i care, but then don't complain that you aren't taken seriously, because you won't be. random postings in the non-ot section of the board that have nothing to do with the topic at hand aren't going to win any folks any favors either (like some of your "kidz" compatriots like to do).

you're not the first "ot kidz" to come around here and get chased off by apathy and active antipathy, and you won't be the last. you have the choice available to you here - you can do your best to help the community be stronger in a _bass related_ manner, and win the respect of your peers, or you can continue the way you are going and find yourself shunned by almost everyone - you won't be censored by me, nor will any of your cronies, as long as the usage agreement is observed and followed. when you do decide you want more out of this board than just a forum for juvenalia, you might find that some folks won't give you the chance. you reap what you sow.

face it - the majority of the folks who participate here are older and don't really care to hear about kiddie things. you have to accept that - there's other forums on the net for that kind of discussion - have at it. by living in OT, you are missing out on a great resource - many of the folks here have been playing bass longer than you've been alive. get over your juvenile "ot kids" crap and come on up to the topicality. you'll grow as a musician for it, and you'll find real respect.

if you make a sincere effort to be a part of the community, you'll be surprised at what you'll find.

there's no war. there are quite a few folks trying not ungently to educate the mostly minor (as in under 21) minority of what they would like to see and participate in the discussion forum that they care about.

perhaps these folks are taking the hint and trying to adjust their posting habits accordingly. some folks require a brick to fall on their heads, and some folks don't :).

i didn't say that "leaving the thread before it turned into an argument" was juvenile, i said, or implied, that being an "ot kid", revelling in that fact, and attempting to justify it and somehow force respect for it, appears to many as juvenile. sorry for the confusion :).

Wow - this really took me by surprise - this is exactly what I have been saying and getting a load of abuse for!

So, if I say things like this - I am whinging, arguing or complaining - John says it and he is the voice of reason!!

Anyway - I would just like to say that I agree 100% with everything John has said in this post and this thread as far as I can remember!!

you just wouldn't be at home if we didn't accuse you of whining, bruce :D would you?

seriously, though, the one point i tried to get across was that folks can very well continue to post childish things, but then they will be treated as such. i'm tolerant of that kind of posting - from past things that you've stated it seems like you're not so tolerant of it.

Hmmm....I don't know - as you say, I think people should be allowed and encouraged to post, as long as it's withing the guidelines - and I would hope people would then defend my right to complain about it!! ;)

I suppose if there were no posts to complain about, then it would be difficult to say that we should be doing better - so in a way, I am tolerant!!
:p

As you say - if people behave in a juvenile way then - fine, but they will deserve to be treated in this way and have complaints made. I am happy for there to be a dialogue.

So - I wouldn't want all juvenile posts to be automatically deleted - I would hope that new posters would get a sense of what is acceptable from what other people say about their own efforts and how the "regulars" actually post. Not from having their posts deleted or threads closed.

The trouble is when the juvenile postings becomes the 'norm' and everything else is in a minority - when the whole site is defined as childish (as you put it) then we are in trouble! :(

OK. But you've admitted it's a place to make friends/have fun. Then why should there be stricter rules. Off topic should be a laid back atmosphere. There will be some threads that you just don't want anything to do with, avoid them. In fact, add everyone who starts a thread you don't like on your ignore list.

No - I don't think this is the answer.

What I was saying and I think John was saying the same thing - is that it is up to all the 'regulars' to set the tone and if somebody behaves in an inappropriate manner (whether that is juvenile, childish or something else)then they will be treated accordingly and people may well say they don't like it.

My analogy is - if somebody comes along and vandalises your favourite "hang-out" - you're not going to just keep quiet, avoid it or ignore it - you are going to say something about it and try to stop them!

I would appreciate it if you would expand the definition of 'regulars' for me. In your opinion, of course.

I don't think a 'corner pub' analogy is relevant,
which is why I would like a more precise definition of your meaning, as I don't want to take it out of context or assume a meaning you may not intend.

Thanks

I wouldn't say "vandalise", I would say "act goofy", in which case you just tell them to mature a bit. If it doesn't work, then you kick'em out.

I think the "OT kids" learned their lesson. Let's move on, please. This conversation keeps going in circles.
