should we change our name?

ok been playing in this band for about a year and a bit
the band name was already decided on before i joined the band as well as the prototype of the logo (which i later re designed)

the guitarist picked the name which he got the idea from watching buffy the vampire slayer however the name was already taken by another band so rather than picking another he just changed the spelling (spelled it as it sounds rather than how its spelled)

now here's the problem with the name
1: no one knows what it means
2: no one can remember it unless they write it down
3: venues keep getting the spelling wrong (well actually there spelling it right were the ones spelling it wrong) and in all the gigs we've played only 2 venues ever got it right
4: 60% of people pronounce it wrong

they keep moaning everytime someone spells it wrong or mis pronounces it and my girlfriend is forever giving out buisness cards with the name on in the vain hope someone will remember us the next day
yet the guitarist refuses to change it despite me telling him the problems he just refuses to accept it
am i the only one with any common sense here?

must be a bassist thing i dont get what the big deal is about changing it i mean its not like we have 1000's of fans and were well established and well known were a new band it takes years to form a name and a rep that people recognise

To be honest, unless you think that you're on the cusp of success, I don't think that's true either. If the guitarist is adamant, then just let him have his way. It's not worth getting into a fight over.

I think changing the name is a good idea. If people are saying it wrong or misspelling it regularly then it needs changed. It's just poor branding. I wonder how many fans you lose just because they can't remember your name when they want to look up your band the next day after a show.

The thing is, the guitarist has his ego attached to it, and there is pretty much no solvent that can break that bond.

You *should* change the band name but you *can't* unless maybe you can get all the other members of the band to side with you.

If so, change it. I don't even think the correct spelling "Corporeal" is a great band name. Not all that memorable and it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. But a purposeful misspelling of an uncommon word? :scowl:

Your band name should be working for you, not against you. It's not a secret code for only those who 'get it'. But your guitar player seems attached to it and is taking it personally.
Change it at the risk of having the guitar player quit.
Keep it at the risk of never having any recognition.

Yeah, if it's "Corporial" you REALLY need to change it. That's just plain old terrible. It's not even phonetically pleasing, just awkward and stupid sounding.

if another band have the name already, change it now while there's chance. if it gets to a point when you HAVE to change it, it'll be too late. it may not, but better safe than sorry, plus if people have trouble with it, it makes sense to change, no?

Could be worst...the band name could be.....CaerBannog.... we have the same problem except for 97% of people pronounce it wrong and about 90% don't know what it means I've been trying to get the band to change it since the second time We played out and I had to explain to everyone I talked to how to pronounce it and what it means now I'm just over it...I just make the Drummer explain it I'm still trying to get them to change it

Better off changing the name now rather than later when you've released a recording.
It would be different if it were an absolutely fantastic band name, but that particular name isn't something that conjures up imagery nor sticks in your mind.
