As I said before I don't think musical taste comes into it. People who watch televised karaoke and chant mindlessly along to Mustang Sally don't have a critical opinion of music, they just consume whatever they are given. The sounds on the radio change periodically but nobody changes the station, they just sponge it up and get on with their stupid lives.

Should you play Mustang Sally?

As I said before I don't think musical taste comes into it. People who watch televised karaoke and chant mindlessly along to Mustang Sally don't have a critical opinion of music, they just consume whatever they are given. The sounds on the radio change periodically but nobody changes the station, they just sponge it up and get on with their stupid lives.
I/we don't play it, but it kills me you guys that get offended either way.
i.e.
"What are you some kind of artist or something?"
or
"I 100% completely refuse, I'm allergic to it"
It won't/has never/will never be played in my band, but if I'm in yours and that's your deal, I'm gonna kill it as hard as I can.

Well, yeah, we noticed when a few posts ago you discussed your urge to kill many times more people than Mao and Stalin put together, haha.
I feel the same way. It's not my favorite song, but I'd rather play Mustang Sally than Sweet Home Alabama - I got out of that place and I'm not going back!
That being said, both songs are in my current coverband setlist and I will play them like I mean it.
It is not in our set list but if it is a request.... sure we play it.
I can see if you are playing some open mic blues jam that it would get way overplayed and that's a problem.
There is a bar in town that has a big sign on the back wall of the stage that says "No Mustang Sally".
I am sure most of us have seen this before.
Brown Eyed Girl is another that (it is in our set list) gets a lot of play. I'd rather play MS than BEG.

This has to be one of the most entertaining threads I've read here recently.
I play in a cover band, and honestly.......I LIKE IT. A lot. It's so much fun and I'm not into the whole "I'm an artist" thing. Because I'm not. I can't write songs for squat. And I'm not overly creative....I'm more the guy who either reproduces lines in a song or modifies them to fit our sound. I'm not against originals...I mean, all songs have to come from somewhere at some point, but there's nothing wrong or immoral about taking some pleasure from playing beat up, worn out, overplayed covers. After all, they kinda became "standards" for a reason. Do I love the songs we play? Nah. Not all of them. But I do like seeing people in the audience enjoying themselves and having fun. Playing a familiar song has worked wonders for us.....and even though we kinda suck, we were able to pack the dance floor with "Tush" and "Mustang Sally" at our last show.
Want the ultimate cheesy bar song? We did "Shook Me All Night Long".....and they LOVED it. Especially the Cougars and SuperCougars.
I had fun doing it.
I say if they want it, play it.
But I draw the line at "Old Time Rock And Roll"....

I really don't understand the hate for Mustang Sally. How often does the average person go out to see a band? Maybe twice a year? So they want to hear Mustang Sally once in a long while. That does not mean they have bad, or no, taste. And to them it is not "tired" but fun to hear once in a while.

I have no problem playing Mustang Sally. And Brick House. And Jumping Jack Flash. And Brown Eyed Girl. And even Sweet Home Alabama. Shucks, I'll even "play" Baby Got Back.
Why? Because these songs ALWAYS pack the dance floor. I enjoy a) getting paid and b) watching chicks shake it on the dance floor. Playing these tired old standards fulfills conditions a) and b), even though at home I would not cue those songs up on the stereo.

It's a simple song. The possibilities for what to play are endless. What's the issue? If you're sick of it, change how you play it. Sheesh.
Good point. You can change it. I mean, it's not "Freebird", which specifies that "this bird you cannot change".
+1 who wants to keep the chicks dancing? ummm... let's see:
1. the bar owner
2. guys that are buying drinks for the dancing girls
3. the chicks want to keep dancing cause the guys are buying them drinks....
repeat as necessary to get another gig
BTW, even Van Morrison hates doing Moondance......i saw him atthe Beacon and some drunks were calling for Moondance all night.....he did it as the very final encore and changed the tempo so no one recognized it....
