I was told that the rest by the G string is a pinky rest used when playing with a pick. Not so?

nah some1 already explained.first bass players played with thumb and so tehnically thait aint a thumb rest,its a finger rest.

Traditional placement of the thumbrest serve absolutely no purpose for me, but it gives it that classic look on my p-bass that I love.

When it's below the G string it's a tugbar not a thumbrest.

I made a few thumb rests from 5000 year old black oak. Extreme Vintage?
They look pretty much like the original black plastic ones. Maybe it's just me (I teach history), but it's cool to use something from the stone age every day...

it is a decal for a vehicle you can use the T or the S depending on where you wanna play

lol... I've never seen anyone do that. Oh, well. I think some of the earliest Fender ideas were based on how they IMAGINED bass players might like to do it, not having any historical precedent to base their innovations on.

I've always wanted a thumbrest between the pups on my p/j but cant get around to drilling holes I've grown comfy just resting it on the P pup but would like a bit more tension sometimes . . .

You can get several different tugbars at basspartresource,com. They have ebony, maple, chrome, brass, rosewood, etc. Really cheap too.

I don't use the tug bar, I added it for aesthetics as this is a modern interpretation of a '57.

do you find the height obtrusive? the string hitting and clacking? just curious . . .
