Here’s my ‘79 P with a rest in the far-more-useful ‘70s upper position:

As an aside, is there anyone out there who makes a replacement Fender rest from a solid chunk of plastic? It seems odd to me that the official ones are a very cheap feeling hollow piece - I always assumed this was a modern thing but even the legit vintage ones I’ve seen are the same (with the exception of those painted wooden single-screw ones on very early Precisions). Unless there’s some (non-cost related) reason for doing them this way?

I just ordered thumb rests to put on all my three bass guitars, in the standard spot at an angle just behind the neck. After over 40 years anchored on pickups I find plucking strings closer to the neck gives a fuller tone, in particular the G string which always tends to sound anaemic otherwise.
