Show me your compact pedalboard setup

Some glamor shots of my super-compact, Pacific Northwest-themed pedal board. Union Tube & Transistor is from East Vancouver, British Columbia, and Benson is from Portland, Oregon.

I used to have a dozen or so pedals, but I realized that I only use a compressor and light overdrive. So I sold all the rest and bought these two. They're not cheap, but they sound fantastic and they're simple (not to mention pretty).

Looks sexy! As a fellow pwn’er, I must know how is the benson preamp on bass?! I’ve been super tempted to scoop one up.

It's exactly what I was looking for. I really like that vintage, lightly overdriven tube sound that you hear on Beatles and Motown records. Most of the other drives and preamps that I've tried for that purpose (including the Darkglass Microtubes and Tech21 VT Bass) were too fizzy or clinical sounding for me.

The Catalinbread SFT came pretty close to what I wanted, but the Benson Preamp is just perfect. It can get very dirty when you turn the drive knob past 12 o'clock, but it always sounds warm. And with the drive knob below 9 o'clock, the overdrive is almost imperceptible until you turn the pedal off and compare it to your dry tone, which then sounds sterile by comparison.

Awesome, I may have to try one out. How is the low end response? Do you run this setup into the front end of an amp? If so what’s your rig look like? Your board is so sick. Love that lab too...

Low-end response is great. I haven't noticed any weakness in the bass. I play a Mustang with flats, so getting a fat low end usually isn't a problem. ;-)

That said, I haven't used this board with a "real" amp yet, just my little Yamaha THR10 practice amp (with and without headphones). I do own an Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 and a 2x10" cabinet, but I live in a small apartment so I can't use that rig indoors and haven't played out anywhere since the pandemic started. Hopefully soon ...

Is that a custom colour job on the lab? Didn’t know they’d do that !

Put this together last night, after a lot of mix and matching over the week. The pedal on the left is a JHS Clover. I thought it kinda drab, so opted to sticker it with our band's fave place to play - Kick Butt Coffee. My OCD self is trying to find a different power cord for the SVT DI. It has this big loop from the DI to where it plugs into the AC outlet on the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power.

Holy crap that tuner.

I just bought one.

How is it for accuracy?

It’s great. I’m not someone who does sophisticated comparisons of pedals, but I prefer the LAB to the MXR Bass Comp I was using previously.

One thing I prefer about it is its simplicity. There are only two knobs, and all the settings sound good, so you don’t have to spend time fiddling or making sure you’ve dialed in precisely the right setting on multiple knobs. When the compression knob on the LAB is at 12 o’clock and the volume all the way up on the bass, the compression is noticeable but not overpowering. And the pedal remains quiet even when you crank the compression all the way up. Plus it’s attractive and well-made, and you can use it with other instruments. (Works great with an acoustic guitar.)

There's some lovely retro vibe in the look of these pedals, I really dig this board.

Where did you get your Wood knob for that tuner?
