Dupli-Color Dark Toreador Red is pretty close...

Dark Toreador Metallic is closer. (dead on?)
It works best if you spray it over a pale ice blue.

Here is mine. I change the pg's out when I feel like it.

Nice touch with the gold screws + black pickguard. It "pops" without being too flashy or "bling-y".

Follow-up on my MIM repair project:

Trying a spot repair failed miserably. In retrospect, it would never produce acceptable results. Among other things, spraying a color coat over Fender's thick clear coat would have cast actual shadows and made the repair stand out even more.

So I went to a long sanding block and 220-grit to level out the paint and scuff the original clear coat so my primer would get a good mechanical bite. During this phase I noticed how rather crude the original paint was and actually how little that mattered. Modern base-coat/clear-coat finishes are economical in materials and labor and the results are absolutely acceptable. That said, my respray will be smoother than original because I am not charging myself for labor and went completely overboard with intercoat sanding.

Here's where we're at as of today. It will hang up for as long as I can stand to wait before I do the 2-part clear.

Awesome post! I did not know MW had a metallic blue base! So cool! I don't know if my Jazz Plus (as seen above) has that goin' on but it was considered "Midnight Wine" in '93. Looking forward to the final result!

That makes sense. After all, "Midnight Wine" is a red that's just barely starting to edge towards purple.

I suppose that would make M.W. a "mostly-opaque color" that has barely enough translucence to let that blue sneak through and alter the perceived color value. If so, then it would work like a subliminal message…you don't consciously notice it unless you know what you're looking at or if you "peel back the layers", so to speak.

Yes, translucent colours will offer more depth to a finish and can be used to create hues unachievable with opaque colours. An example is the old clear-coats aging amber over Lake Placid Blue giving it a green tint, or moving Burgundy Mist Metallic away from pink and Oly White more creamy by warming it up. Whether Fender was still spraying blue under their MW finish in '93 or not, the Jazz Plus I have looks almost black in low light and cranberry red under bright light so it's possible. It has no chips on it so it would be hard to know.
