It's for sale so I might be out soon, but as long as it's still here...
Of course, some of the Gretsch guitars (haven't see it on basses other than homemade jobs) had actual drum wrap material used on the tops. Here's one I did in large flake nitro:
Candy green over gold flake.
And a serape blanket paint job. Lots of taping on that one.

this is my only sparkle:
it's made from parts. the body was made made for a J, but i converted to PJ. it has a fantastic neck (for my hands) so lately, it has been my go-to.

A parts/build bass. Yours truly. USA Allparts ash P body. Allparts P neck. Top notch hardware. I had Marty Bell do a large metal flake silver finish job. Back about 10 years ago when I did this, Marty's finish was around $450. Total bass weighs under 8lbs. (About 7lbs, 14 oz.) Guess what? I never play it!!!!!!!! True!

G&L had the best sparkle finishes out there, hands down.
