Although I like the Dimarzio pickups.. if there are not any problems with the original PU in the Yamaha, i would leave it alone...
I went that route many years ago with my basses and have always gone back to the original configuration later on... and wound up putting the replacement PUs on ebay..

They are great basses (Yamaha bb300).. I had the opportunity to buy one years ago and missed it... leave it alone and play it.. if you want a different sound get another bass to fill that void.. I dont tthink it would make a night and day difference anyway and the money could be used somewhere else..

Thank you so much. It saves a couple of bucks and it makes life easier. I have BBG5S and Tune TWB 53 for more advanced sound..

Thanks! The BB1200S came in two colors, translucent red or green (like Christmas, I guess); I think the green is less common, but I prefer the red. I'm not usually a fan of visible woodgrain, but it works really well with trans red (like on an SG guitar), and on the BB you can see the through-neck and the mahogany stripes.

It's the stock Yamaha preamp. The whole bass is stock. I don't think it's the same as the preamps in the modern active Yammies, but I don't know for sure (anyone know?).

Thanks, Buskman! I love it so far. The music store I went to carries Peavey, Schecter, and Yamaha and the BB414 blew the other brands away.

The variety of sounds this bass makes is awesome. With the P pup soloed and the treble rolled all the way off, I get a smooth, low, Barney Miller bass line tone. Turning the tone knob up brightens the tone and lets more harmonics come through. The tone knob has a nice range also. It doesn't work like an on/off switch. Soloing the bridge pup gives me a bright, buzzy, rock tone with a lot of mids and harmonics, and with both pups together, I get an fantastic blend.

I had to order one in Metallic Orange and it took 3 1/2 weeks to come in. I'm not sure if there was a problem on Yamaha's end or with my local store, but it was worth the wait. I like it so much, it makes me want to pick it up and play with it all the time, which is just what a good instrument should do, right?

I have the exact same bass in the same color. I love it too. Not only does it sound and play amazingly well but the metallic orange is spectacular.
