show us your first builds everyone

Here is a rough progress pic. It still has a long way to go, and I need to clean it up alot, but I'm enjoying the whole process.

It's amazing what you can do the first time out. I am impressed with all of it.

Here is my first instrument. All scrap left over from cabinet work except for the fret board and the rosette. White oak body. Redwood top. Cherry neck. Never bought a neck and don't think I ever will. Carving necks is one of the best parts of this.

Still have it and it still sounds great.

Yes, the pickups were painted. It took many tries to get them right but they came out good. Just remember if you ever do this to your pickups, apply a finish on them after! The string wear is slowly wearing down the paint. More mojo though. :bassist:

I used so many oils on the fingerboard over the past 2 years that it is too dark to tell what wood it is. It's also epoxy coated and plays incredibly well. I love it!

Wow...that is all I can say. Everyone's bass looks outstanding.

Is there a site that can help me do that? I would probably just buy a body and neck already and sand it to the wood and finish it...I especially like the dark woods with maple lines through them...etc....

Link? Or are all of you just that badass?

i just bought a book called "make your own electric guitar" by melvyn hiscock. its awesome it walks you through everything step by step and it has lots of pictures

Hey Jon, that's the first I've seen of that fretless P-J. I love the color scheme.

FWIW you can get EMG P-Js with white covers. But then they wouldn't be Barts, would they....

Ttogg, you have made a wise purchase and investment in time by going with the Hiscock book. So many guys jump the gun and buy lumber first. Or tools.

Fantastic, thanks! I was actually checking that out yesterday on amazon.

Have you been able to build a bass after reading that book? Pics? I will search this thread and see if I can find if you already posted pics.

Now I will have a project to keep me busy for a few years. :hyper:

both are excellent books, I recommend them both to anyone who wants to start building. I borrowed both from a friend of mine and read them from cover to cover, very interesting.

Enrique, when I saw you last posted on this thread, I thought you were posting pics of your finished bass, cuz quite frankly IMHO my vote would go to you for your first build. POST SOME PICS !! I cant wait to see it !!
